  6. Dear Mark & Carrolle, I grieve with you the tragic loss of your dear daughter, Caroline. I’m thinking of you in all these hours & days of sorrow and grief. I’ve learned on the bitter anvil of personal struggle that carrying one another’s burdens isn’t just a Christian maxim. It’s central to all the best qualities of our faith. Also, I think the care and concern of our fellow humans make it possible for us, despite our grief, to somehow press bravely onward. I know you’ll both do just that–for each other, for your children, & in the sweet promise of life eternal. I do not write lightly, but from the poignant memory of a car wreck in 1975 which claimed the life of our own dear child. HeShe didn’t make it are words all parents hope never to have to hear! Kim will speak to you tomorrow, I’m sure; but I cannot make it to Wilson in time. For now, just know I hold you in my thoughts, in my prayers, and in my heart–ever. May God comfort & guide. John Duvall

I’m sure I can’t begin to understand the pain you feel but I wish and pray for your healing. I do know that for 16 years she was blessed by having you as parents and the support of a loving family. 16. I was there that snowy, tragic night with my husband, a volunteer with Coopers FD. I sat in the truck that night and prayed that God would help this young girl’s family cope with her loss. I cried as if I knew her. What a precious young life cut abruptly too short. Life doesn’t seem fair at times like these. I am so thankful to learn that the family is so involved in church and will allow God to help them heal. I live very close to the scene of the accident and have seen the Memorial everyday since. I don’t personally know this family or Caroline but I have been extremely touched and saddened by this tragedy. Remember, the Hathaway family has their own personal angel in heaven now and she will always be watching over you……may God be with you……

  17. Mark, Carrolle, and the Hathaway Family…..My heart is so heavy….I think Caroline was about 6 the last time I saw her and she was still just as beautiful. What an amazing, loving and giving child you raised, you should be very very proud!! May God give you strength and courage in these days ahead. My thoughts and Prayers are with you all. Love Paige

  19. I went to school with Caroline in elementary. Coopers Elementary! We became bestfriends in kindergarden. I remember going to one of Carolines sleepovers when we were younger. We was both into Brittney Spears, Nsync & The BlackStreet Boys ) Unfortunately, my family moved out of Sharpsburg to Rocky Mount & I had to change schools. We kept in contact til we were about the age of 9. I had a party at CiCi’s pizza & somehow my mom got in touch with you guys. That was my last time seeing Caroline (at the party). I’ve been trying to get in contact with her over the internet, and various other ways too. I even looked on facebook, couldnt find her (i was spelling ‘Hathaway’ soooo wrong). When I found out about the accident I was devistated! I went to the memorial service at Southern Nash last night & when it was over, it was sooo many people trying to talk to you, I never got the change too ) Hoping you still remember me (Cashae Thomas), I have kept you all in my prayers and would like to get in contact with you as soon as possible. I’m very sorry for your loss & like Mary Hannah’s friend said the whole in your heart will heal but never go away. Cashae Thomas

  20. I wrote this poem for my niece Heather Meredith. She really loved Caroline and my thoughts and prayers go out to the entire family and friends in your time of sorrow. Dina Davis-Battleboro, NC

  21. GODS LENT ANGEL GOD I ASK YOU TO WELCOME MY FRIEND, ON A COLD, WET NIGHT, HER LIFE CAME TO A SUDDEN END, HER SMILE AND HER LAUGH YOU WILL ADORE, ITS HARD TO ACCEPT THAT I WONT HEAR THAT ANYMORE, SHE WAS SPECIAL IN SO MANY WAYS, SHE ALWAYS KNEW HOW TO BRIGHTEN MY DAYS, A HEART SO PURE AND FULL OF GOLD, HER LIFE NOW, I GIVE YOU TO HOLD, TELL HER I LOVE HER AND TO WATCH OVER ME, I PRAY, THAT I WILL MISS HER MORE EACH PASSING DAY, THAT IN MY HEART, HER FRIENDSHIP WILL REMAIN, NO ONE CAN EVER REPLACE HER, IT WONT BE THE SAME, SHE WOULD TELL ME NOT TO BE SAD OR CRY, THAT IT WAS GODS TIME FOR HER TO DIE, THAT YOU WANTED HER HOME IN HEAVEN WITH YOU, SHE WAS A LENT ANGEL, THAT IS SO TRUE, TELL HER THAT I WILL BE SEEING HER ONE DAY UP THERE, THERE WILL BE SO MANY THINGS WITH HER TO SHARE, TELL HER THAT I MISS HER AND WISH SHE WERE HERE, AND THAT I WILL NEVER FORGET HER, HAVE NOT THAT FEAR, THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME WHAT TIME WE HAD, HELP ME LORD THROUGH MY TIME OF BEING SAD, YOU LENT HER TO ME AND FOR THIS I COULD NEVER REPAY, THOUGH I WISH, HERE, IS WHERE GODS LENT ANGEL WOULD HAVE STAYED. IN REMEMBRANCE OF CAROLINE HATHAWAY FOR HEATHER BY DINA DAVIS LOVE YOU HEATHER!

  22. Dear Mark, Carrolle, Mary Hannah, Katie, and John…I am so very sorry to hear of Caroline’s passing. I remember meeting Caroline when she was just a little girl at Rob and Kim’s wedding; she was such a sweetheart! I can still see her little face in my memories. Caroline grew into such a wonderful young lady, and I am so glad she had the opportunity to enjoy her life to the fullest. I am sure she lived her life with wonder and excitement, as all of us should! I pray that God will envelope you with His love and peace at this difficult time. I love all of you very much as well. Renee Blanda (Rob Blanda’s sister).

  23. Mr and Mrs. Hathaway, I never had the honor of meeting your beautiful daughter, Caroline. My daughter attended school with her and spoke of her on several occassions. My heart is grieved by your loss. I have four daughters of my own and won’t pretend to imagine what it is your are feeling. Please know that I will be lifting your family before the Lord. We don’t always understand why things happen the way that they do sometimes. I do know that God says that his ways are not our ways and his thoughts are not our thoughts and that he is working all things out for our good. I believe that Father God has your precious Caroline cradled in his arms now and she is safe and at peace. I pray that God gives you His peace that surpasses all understanding. I believe Caroline is watching over each and every one of you. Routing you on in this race we call life and I believe that when this race comes to an end Caroline will be waiting for you with open arms. Our help comes from the Lord. May he bless and keep each one of you and as the days go by may this burden become lighter. Love in Christ.
