Broadus Elizabeth Chewning Cobb passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 04, 2011. Born in Anson County on August 09, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Charlie William Chewning and Hattie Ramsey Chewning. She was preceded in death by husband, James Russell Cobb; brothers, Charles Chewning, Bennette Chewning, Thomas Chewning; and sister, Lois Chewning Proctor.
Broadus was a long time member of First Baptist Church and an outstanding member of the community. She graduated from West Edgecombe High School and continued her education at Carolina School of Commerce. She was most remembered from school as an outstanding ball player.
Broadus was involved in many clubs and organizations to include the BPW, Altrusa Club, and was a Twin County Hall of Fame Board Member. She continued on to work and retired from S.H. Kress and Company after 40 years of service, being the first female manager in the company for 19 years. Broadus mentored many young women in the community that continued to be successful in business.
She was a great friend to her family. The joy of her life was doing for others and making everyone happy. She was a great project manager and a creative garden designer. Broadus had a love for flowers and this was expressed in the beauty of her yard. She grew the flowers at her home that were sold at S.H. Kress for many years. Broadus and her late husband, James Russell Cobb provided the property for Cobbs Corner and was therefore graciously named after them.
Broadus leaves behind her beloved sisters, Rachel Sexton, Doris Godwin, JoAnn Hayes and Carolyn Atkinson, all of Rocky Mount; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Faye Varnell of Nashville, Jeannette Johnson and Inez Parker, of Rocky Mount.
The family will receive friends and relatives 6:00pm to 8:00pm Thursday, October 06, 2011 at Wheeler Woodlief Funeral Home and other times at the home of John and Carolyn Atkinson. A Going Home service will be held at 2:00pm Friday, October 07, 2011 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Grisham officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 200 South Church Street, Rocky Mount NC 27804.
Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount NC 27804. You may share memories and condolences with the Cobb family by visiting www.wheelerwoodlief.com.
