Billy Jackson Smith

ROCKY MOUNT - Billy Jackson Smith, age 69, passed away on Monday, February 13, 2017. Born in Lenoir County, NC on May 16, 1947, he was the son of the late A.J. Smith and Bertha Mosley Smith. He was also preceded in death by other family members, Bobby Edwards, Harold Edwards, George Brown, C. W. Hornaday, Judson Finch, and Mark Worrock. Billy was a lifelong resident of Nash and Edgecombe counties and was well known in this area. He returned home to live in April of 1976. Billy is survived by his group home family, Edwards Residential Care, Carol Edwards, Blake Deans, Charles Stocks, Bryan Best, Dwight Layman and the home's kitty, Boots. Special family members include his cousin, Betty Dean Mosley Jackson and Tom Braden who helped to care from him, making sure he had plenty of milk shakes, ice cream, cookies and always cut his nails and shaved him and kept him handsome. Billy had numerous cousins and friends in the community who visited and stood by him during his illness. He will truly be missed by everyone who knew him and has worked with him, especially his Special Olympic friends and his teachers and fellow students who attended Nash Community College during his years there. We all feel richly blessed to have known Billy and to have been able to share wonderful years of life experiences with him. Thank you to Edwards Residential Care, Nash Special Olympics and Nash Community College for helping Billy to be able to live in the community successfully and happy all these 40 + years. A special thank you to Hunter Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation, Hospice of Nash, Dr. Douglas Boyette, Shelly Rhodes, Kiki Grant, and Debbie Stilly for their dedicated care of Billy. A Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Pineview Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
