Barbara Gordon Buchan Griggs, daughter of the late John and Azile Buchan, was born August 29, 1950 in Rocky Mount, NC. She peacefully departed this earthly life on July 10, 2015.
Barbara graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High School in 1968. She then went on to proudly serve her country during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force.
Barbara felt at ease when she had a book in her hand, sand under her feet, and a cool ocean breeze brushing across her face. She loved the Norkfolk/Virgina Beach area and spent a number of years there. Her love of education excellence and reading were inspired by her love, admiration, appreciation for special teachers, Thelma Lundy and Nancy Hardy.
She was a life-long learner and decided to return to school after many years. She attended Nash Community College to study nursing. In 2005, she graduated with honors and became a registered nurse.
She worked in the healthcare industry for many decades caring for patients at Rex Hospital, Hospice, Facility Nursing Care, Nash General Hospital, Home Health Agencies, last helping patients and families through Finch Home Agency.
She sincerely loved God and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. Barbara was a beloved member of First Presbyterian Church of Rocky Mount, NC. She touched many with her belief and courage to encourage those she met to move forward despite the life's obstacles.
Barbara's mother, father and husband Tommy Griggs preceded her in death. Barbara leaves to cherish her memories: daughter Roxanne Shover and grandson Jaykwon Harris both of Garner, NC; sister Emily D. Hartley of New Hampshire; sister Mary Lou Buchan of Nags Head, NC; a niece and several nephews; and her loving church family at First Presbyterian Church.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 2:00pm at First Presbyterian Church, 153 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. Visitation with the family will be following the service.

Chris Brown I’m gonna miss sister Barbara, I loved my sister very much.
Barbara, you were such a kind hearted, smart, faithful person. I enjoyed every moment we were together. In nursing school you excelled and took every class very seriously, I know that graduating was one of your proudest moments. Your kindness was shown in the time that you invited me to the beach when I was going through a rough time, we walked on the beach and shared some laughs; that time helped me heal. Later, I enjoyed spending time with you and hearing about your job. You loved your work and the people you helped. You were an amazingly kind nurse who always put her patients first. You loved God and showed it in many ways. I will miss your loving and inspirational e-mails. You will be missed by so many! I love you, BG. Barbara Jenkins and family
