July 22, 1940 ~ September 11, 2015

Baerbel Susanne “Susi” Leuckfeld Goodman, age 75, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2015. Susi was the daughter of the late Willi Karl Leuckfeld, Jr. and Elli Elisabeth Reher Leuckfeld. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Manfred Leuckfeld, and her sisters, Rosamarie Brieskorn and Ingrid Holtmann. Susi was born Monday, July 22, 1940 in Aschersleben, in the former German Democratic Republic (“East Germany”). She refugeed to the Federal Republic of Germany (“West Germany”) as a teenager. Susi was a graduate of Instituto Betania in Rome, Italy. That led to her being offered the opportunity to come to the United States for college studies. She received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas in 1966, and the Master of Theology degree from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1970. She did further study in Education and in Art at the University of Southern Mississippi. She taught in the Nash County Public Schools at Spring Hope Elementary School from 1974 until her retirement in 1990. Susi had a passion for art which she passed along to her students. It was her second grade class that designed the official flag for the town of Spring Hope with her guidance, and she made the original flag by hand on her kitchen table. Her work was featured in an issue of Country Living Magazine. She was a past prizewinner in the Rocky Mount Mothers Day Art Festival. She remained active as a painter and sculptor until a few weeks before her death. Susi is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. David W. Goodman of Rocky Mount; her sister, Christa Hegglin of Wiesbaden, Germany; two brothers-in-law, Hans Brieskorn and Friedhelm Holtmann, both of Wiesbaden; and three nephews and numerous great nieces, all of whom live in Germany.
