Anita Wheeless Morgan

May 7, 1923 ~ December 14, 2015

Anita Wheeless Morgan passed away peacefully on December 14, 2015 at the age of 92. She was born May 7, 1923 in Edgecombe County to the late Annie Savage and Roscoe Willis Wheeless. Affectionately called “Nee Nee” by her grandchildren, Anita was a lifelong resident of Rocky Mount until three years ago when she moved to the Fountains at the Albemarle in Tarboro. She was preceded in death by her 19-year-old daughter Linda Ann, while a student at Meredith College, and her husband Marion Edward “Pug” Morgan, the love of her life for 53 years. Together, they owned and operated Grimes-Morgan, Inc. in Rocky Mount for more than 50 years. Anita was valedictorian of the class of 1941 at Rocky Mount Senior High and remained a dedicated and loyal Blackbird, spearheading countless class reunions until the last in 1997, and promoting a lifetime of memories and friendships. She was a founding member of the Englewood Garden Club and member of Englewood Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount. A lover of nature and the outdoors, her family cannot see a bluebird, hummingbird, wren or butterfly without thinking of “Nita.” She belonged to countless bridge clubs and loved a good card game as much as anyone. Anita is survived by her son Robert Edward (Bob) Morgan and his wife Judy Gatling Morgan of Greenville. Also cherishing her memory are three grandsons and their families: Julian Marion Morgan, his wife Jessica and their daughter Julia Lee of Greenville; Robert Edward (Rem) Morgan II, his wife Jaclyn and their son Gatling Creek of Greenville; and Jon Durham Morgan and his wife Kelly of Raleigh. Anita also is survived by her adored dog Maggie who remains happy and healthy. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2015 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services in Rocky Mount with Rev.
