ROCKY MOUNT - Mr. Alford "Al" Lou Sweatt, Jr. 86, died Saturday, August 21, 2010. He was born on January 6, 1924 to the late Alford Lou Sweatt, Sr. and Jessie F. Murray Sweatt. He was preceded in death by sisters: Ada Beatrice Roberts; Lottie Juanita Perkins; Anna Mary Evelyn Cobb; Jessie Louise Kimmer; and brothers James Fred Sweatt; John Murray Sweatt; Harrell Gordon Sweatt, Alvin Eugene Sweatt, and William Branch Sweet.
Mr. Sweatt was Winecoff High School class 1941 class valedictorian. Al worked with Dunn and Bradstreet in Ohio before going to Williamston, NC to work with their Merchant Association. On May 31, 1953 he began work as the Chief Executive of the Rocky Mount Merchants Association, retiring on May 29, 1997. The Rocky Mount Community Foundation grew from what was the Rocky Mount Merchant Association. He was a sponsor of the Rocky Mount Chapter of The Credit Professionals International; member of the Rocky Mount Jaycees and the Rocky Mount Civitan Club. Al was very proud of being a Presbyterian. He is survived by 13 nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday, August 23, 2010 in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles F. Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:00 PM, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home. Mr. Sweatt will be laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, NC on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 2:00pm, with a graveside service.
