Asbie Lynwood "Woody" Herrington, Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT – Asbie Lynwood “Woody” Herrington, Jr., age 81, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. Born in Lenoir County, NC on August 7, 1941, he was the son of the late Asbie Lynwood Herrington, Sr. and Hattie Letha Newton Herrington. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Mary Margaret Herrington. Woody retired from the City of Rocky Mount as a District Fire Chief with over 32 years of dedicated service and was also the owner and operator of Custom Care Trims for over 40 years. Woody was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Mechanically inclined, creative, artistic, and good with his hands, Woody was also a history buff, loved to laugh, enjoyed traveling, and was known for his spaghetti sauce. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all who knew him. Woody is survived by his wife of 61 years, Susan Russ Herrington; his daughters, Heather Moseley and husband, Howard, and Melissa Peele and husband, Chris; his grandchildren, Spencer Moseley, Asbie Moseley, and Cailin Dunavan; his brother, Charlie David Herrington, Sr.; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Barkley. A Celebration of Woody’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803 with Rev. Nathan Whitman officiating. A visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to the service in the Sanctuary of St. Paul United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Woody’s memory to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 1217 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803, Firefighters Relief Fund, 1201 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1201, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 West Farris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.   1. Q: Describe where Asbie worked and what they did

    A: I worked with Woody a long time at the Rocky Mount Fire Department and will remember his jokes he played on us. He was always there for all the fireman when we needed him. Woody always enjoyed showing up about supper time to eat at one of the Fire Stations. Good memories I will always remember.

  3. Woody was my Captain in 1978 at Station 1. He was a fun guy to work with and I and anybody that worked with him have great memories.Rest in peace Woody and we’ll be at the Big House again

  4. My time at Cusom Car Trims was some of my best memories. Woody was a great boss and amazing mentor. I am going to miss him so much. I send my condolences to his family.
