Thomas Carlton Pierce

February 25, 1936 ~ September 15, 2014

Dr. Thomas Carlton Pierce, age 78, passed away surrounded by his family at CVICU Unit, Vidant Medical Center, Greenville, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Thomas Reggie Pierce and Annie Mae Smith Pierce. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Edsel Pierce, Hardy Pierce and Franklin Pierce and by one sister, Nina Pierce Bethune. Carlton attended undergraduate and dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He practiced general dentistry for five years in Durham, NC. He then received his Master in Prosthodontics at UNC Dental School. Carlton practiced dentistry for fifty years. Carlton loved his work, his patients, his friends, his church, the Church of the Good Shepherd, golf, vegetable gardening, fishing and hunting. He loved his pets and his fur family. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Nancy Wicker Pierce. He is survived by five children: Dr. W. Brooks Pierce and his wife, Dr. Kristen McCue of University Park, Maryland; Wesley H. Pierce of Durham, NC; Laura Pierce Smith and her husband, Travis S. Smith of Clayton, NC; K. Judd Pierce of Greenville, NC and Jessica G. Pierce of Raleigh, NC. He is survived by five grandchildren: Alexandra, Rose, Lucas, Emily and Cole. Carlton is also survived by one sister, Marion Pierce Strahan and her husband, Ron Strahan of Nacogdoches, Texas, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Rocky Mount, NC on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 10:00am. A reception will be held immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Church of the Good Shepherd, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC or the Salvation Army, 420 Paul Street, Rocky Mount, NC. His gentle demeanor, sense of humor, and his way of making you feel as though you were the only person in the room made him so endearing.   8. Nancy, I am so sorry to learn of Carlton’s passing. As you know, he and his family befriended me even before I moved to Chapel Hill and the dental school. Then, we were office mates for a time.
