Robert Eugene Baggett Jr., 68, of Rocky Mount, passed peacefully from this world into the loving care of his Savior on February 19, 2025. Born in Fort Bragg, NC on March 21, 1956, he is survived by his mother, Betty Sue Phillips Baggett. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Eugene Baggett, Sr., and brother, Patrick Keith Baggett.
There was no one quite like Baggett. A man devoted to his God, his family, his church, the Rocky Mount community, law enforcement officers, and to Bright Leaf hot dogs! He was married to Susie for 48 years, and she loved and cared for him selflessly until the end. He was a beloved son, brother, dad, and granddaddy, whose devotion shaped the lives of all who knew him. As a grandaddy, he brought an extra level of joy and laughter through crazy-themed stories. His deep faith in Christ transformed his life and motivated his service. He REALLY loved hotdogs…but not as much as he loved Jesus and his family.
After 35 years of dedicated service, Captain Baggett retired from the Rocky Mount Police Department, leaving behind a remarkable legacy. He mentored many officers, shaping a generation of skilled and knowledgeable professionals. His impact will be felt for years to come, as his legacy continues to inspire those who follow in his footsteps.
A teacher at heart, he blessed so many with his unique teaching style—whether it was cadets in the Basic Law Enforcement Training, young parents at St. Paul UMC, attendees at the Citizen’s Police Academy, kids on the street, middle and high school boys in Sunday School at Englewood Baptist, camp counselors at CWR and CWS, or his children and grandchildren—all were entertained and instructed with ways of life, faith, and community.
In a world that is often marked by division, Baggett bridged gaps to serve others with love and compassion. Driven by his Christian faith and dedication to his community, he went beyond societal divides, like race and class, to invest others. It is inspiring to think about the way he touched so many lives, regardless of their background, just through his example of selfless service.
Rob is survived by his wife, Susan Kelly Baggett; his daughter, Julie Ann Baggett; his son, Robert Eugene Baggett, III (Lauren); his grandchildren, William Robert Baggett, Nora Kate Baggett, and Luke Nelson Baggett; his sister, Cindy Baggett Weatherly (John); his brother, Philip Russ Baggett, Sr. and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends.
A Celebration of Life Service to honor Captain Baggett will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Englewood Baptist Church, 1350 S Winstead Ave, Rocky Mount, NC 27803. Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM prior to, as well as following the service at Englewood Baptist Church. Law Enforcement officers are encouraged to attend (uniforms are considered proper attire). After the service, Baggett would like for all in attendance to stay for a Bright Leaf hot dog reception.
In lieu of flowers, honor the legacy of Rob Baggett by walking next door to have a conversation with your neighbor, thanking a police officer, and connecting with your church. Donations may also be made be made to Mission Ministry at Englewood Baptist Church.

So sorry to hear. Lots of good memories.
The community will miss him. Take comfort for I know as well as you that he was a Believer and will live on.
Rob was like a bother to me, we shared many good and bad times together. I know he is having good times now as he laughs and talks with his Lord and Savior.
I am so sorry for your loss. He was always so helpful when called upon by the Clerk’s office. He was a great man and Police Captain. I certainly hold your family in prayer.
Thanks for memories as of Police officer and your time at the church in Rocky mount
You will be missed but will not forgotten
He was a great person and he will be missed.
