ROCKY MOUNT – Phillip Wayne Joyner, age 77, went home to be with his Lord and Savior surrounded by his family on Friday, September 29, 2023, after a valiant fight with dementia. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on October 28, 1945, he was the son of the late Hubert Harrison Joyner and Pauline Turner Joyner. He was also preceded in death by his infant brother; his mother-in-law, Obie Cressman, and his father-in-law, Wayne Cressman.
After graduating from West Edgecombe High School in 1965, Phillip joined the US Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged as a Private after six years. After serving his country, Phillip began a lifelong career as a salesperson for Brame Specialty Company for 47 years. He served as a deacon and building and grounds chairperson for many years for the former Sharpsburg Baptist Church. Phillip and his wife later became members of Memorial Baptist Church. One of his proudest achievements was being a member and former Fire Chief and Treasurer for Sharpsburg Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer for 52 years. Phillip was instrumental in the construction of a new station in 1999. He was also a member of Nash County and NC Fireman’s Association. Phillip also had a passion for fishing and hunting with friends and family.
Phillip is survived by his wife of 56 years, Winifred Cressman Joyner; his daughter, Raven Edwards and husband, David of Kinston; his grandsons, Parker Edwards and Seth Edwards; his sisters, Rachel J. Pollard, Patsy J. Land, and Gail J. House and husband, Danny; his sister-in-law, Laurie Cressman and husband, Bill; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service to celebrate Phillip’s life will be held on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services with Rev. Tony Russ officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, October 1, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
