Phillip Arden Pullen

ROCKY MOUNT - Phillip Arden Pullen, age 95, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2021. Born in Mannings Township, Nash County, NC on March 3, 1926, he was the son of the late Robert Pullen and Emily Parrish Pullen. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Julia Cooke Pullen, his brother, Charlie Pullen and sister, Betty Jean Rose, son-in-law, George Hughes, and his grandson, James Christopher Henriksen. Phillip grew up in Roanoke Rapids, NC and graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School. Following graduation, he served in the 70th Infantry Division of the US Army during the European campaign in World War II, having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, where he earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service. Phillip and his wife, Julia, married in 1948 and moved to Rocky Mount where he worked in the family business Peacock Meat Co. After his retirement, he went to work at Belk Department Store until age 86. He has been a member of First Baptist Church for nearly 70 years, having served as a greeter and a Deacon. Phillip was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer all of his life. Phillip loved people and always expressed how blessed he was to have so many friends. A loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, and friend to all, he will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Phillip is survived by his daughters, Judy Hughes of Shallotte and Sandra Otwell (Ron) of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Jennifer Malick (Brian King) and John Phillip Henriksen (Kristin); his great-grandchildren, Cherokee Motes (Bri), Sophie Motes, and Smith Henriksen; his great-great grandchildren, Stella and Everett; and his brother, Lucius Pullen. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 200 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Rev. Bill Grisham and Rev. Luke Lunceford officiating. Burial will follow the service at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, June 4, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. The family would like to say a special thanks to the staff of Spring Arbor for their wonderful care for our daddy during his time there. We also feel blessed by his friends at First Baptist Church who took seriously their promise to look after him and to all his other friends who enriched his life.   1. A great loss from a wonderful uncle and person. He will be missed. My best wishes and prayers to his family.

  2. Philip has a good heart. Philip knew no strangers. Always happy, always had a smile on his face and willing to help anybody with anything. Philip loved the Lord Jesus. Every Sunday, Philip was there. I will miss him but knowing we will see him again. That’s a promise I stand on from God. Philip , you are with your darling wifeJulia, now. See you soon.

  3. I met Phillip through a mutual friend, Fred Lee, his quail hunting partner and golfing buddy. What a pair! I always looked forward to their annual chitting cook in Leggett the first Saturday in March……What an event. I am honored to have known him and he will be missed greatly

  4. Mr. Phillip was a friendly guy. I had an opportunity to work with him at Belk for many years. I can remember after he would eat his lunch, he would often prop his leg across a chair and take him a little nap in the break room. Youlanda Bulluck
