Rocky Mount – Leonard Barbee Wiggins, age 76, passed away on Tuesday May 30, 2023. Len was born in Jacksonville, NC on December 19, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, Junius Leonard Wiggins and Ida Sutton Barbee Wiggins; and his wife of 39 years, Donna Mease Wiggins.
Len graduated from Richlands High School in 1965 and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968. After graduation Len married Donna. He and Donna had attended middle school, high school, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill together. Len then joined the U.S. Navy and he and Donna spent the next six years at several Naval bases around the country with Len serving on several cruises. His final rank was Lieutenant. After completing his service, Len and Donna settled in Rocky Mount where Len worked at Nash Health Care Systems in staff training. At the time of his retirement, he was serving as Manager of Educational Services.Len’s personal interests and activities were many including: support for UNC at Chapel Hill, history, genealogy, love of all things U.S Navy, reading and writing poetry, painting, support for the arts, and boating. Len was active in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Rocky Mount serving in a leadership role including time as President of the Fellowship.
Leonard is survived by his brother, Gary Wiggins and wife, Margaret; his niece, Cally Wiggins Coley and husband David; his nephew, Wesley Alan Wiggins; four grandnieces and grandnephews; Pyewacket and BB his beloved cats; other extended family members; and sister-in-law Joy Mease.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Leonard’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with the Reverend Kathie McCutcheon, Interfaith Minister officiating. Visitation with the family will be held prior to the services from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
A Reception will be held following the service at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Rocky Mount at 516 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount.
