Rocky Mount – John “Jay” Cleveland Lucas, age 66, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025. Born in Nash County, NC on November 30, 1958, he was the son of the late Silas Perry Lucas and Betty Doris Jackson Williams. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Elijah Jr. Williams; his sisters, Cynthia “Cindy” Lynn Lucas Lee, Joyce Marie Lucas Williams, Wanda Jean Lucas Hall, and Deborah “Debbie” Darlene Lucas Wood.
A devout and faithful Christian, Jay loved his Lord and Savior and attended Eagle’s Nest Church of God in Elm City. He worked for the Town of Sharpsburg for over 20 years in the Utilities Department. Jay was a big Beatles fan whom he enjoyed listening to and was a short-wave radio enthusiast, which some would refer to him as an expert. His passion for music was shown by his love of playing the guitar and drums. A dedicated and caring brother, uncle, and good friend to many, Jay will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Jay is survived by his brothers, Willard “Perry” Lucas and William Amos Lucas and wife, Cynthia; his nieces, Renead Joyner, Nakisha Floyd, Lori Reason, and Cynthia Davis; his nephews, Joseph Williams, Matthew Hall, and Anthony Lucas; and many extended family members and good friends.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jay’s life will be held on Friday, May 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804, with Rev. Autry Pridgen officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 PM to 5:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
