Dorothy Louise Matthews Langley

July 21, 1938 ~ October 15, 2020

ROCKY MOUNT – Dorothy Louise Matthews Langley, age 82, passed away on October 15, 2020. Born in Cumberland County, NC on July 21, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Norman Dalton Matthews and Frances Widdifield Matthews. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Norman Douglas Matthews and Charles Thomas Matthews; and her friend, Lois Webb.
Dorothy was a homemaker for all of her adult life. She loved her husband, her children, her grandchildren, and her friends with all of her heart. Dorothy was very proud of her home, her yard and her beautiful flowers, especially her favorite, red geraniums. She also enjoyed watching her hummingbirds feed from her kitchen window.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Otha Gene Langley; her son, Randall Keith Langley and wife, Denise, of Battleboro; her daughter, Barbara Langley Dickens and husband, Steve, of Red Oak; her five grandchildren, Matthew Langley, Katherine Langley, Adam Dickens and wife, Courtney, Evan Dickens, and Parker Dickens; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Langley of Smithfield, VA and Judy Bass of Rocky Mount; along with many special nieces and nephews. In addition to her immediate family, Dorothy is survived by special friends, Joanne Flowers, Emma Lynn Wheeler, Patsy Dickens, Myrna Kay Robinson, and Lisa Taylor.
The family would like to say a special thanks to her caregivers, Mattie Davis, Shirley Etheridge, Del Manning and Brenda Cox for their dedication and love for Dorothy.
A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2020 at 3:30 PM at Mill Branch Cemetery with Pastor Chris Fowler officiating. The family will receive friends at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM before the Graveside Service.
Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made in Dorothy’s memory to Nash UNC Health Care Systems Hospice & Palliative Care, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 or Red Oak Baptist Church, PO Box 260, Red Oak, NC 27868.

  1. Our hearts are heavy upon receiving the news of mama Dot entering his nearer presence. No Question that her last breath with us was actually her first breath in the nearer presence of her Lord and Savior.   5. I was so sad to read that Dot had died. Her sweet spirit will live on in our hearts forever. She was a courageous soul and after seeing her video, I know where her heart was. I love you all and you know Boogie did too. Gene, you have my prayers and love.
