ROCKY MOUNT – Corinne Etheridge Landis, age 95, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Born in Nash County, NC on April 25, 1929, she was the daughter of the late J. M. Etheridge and Mary Fisher Etheridge. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Kelly Landis, Jr.; her son, H. Kel Landis, III; and her sisters, Lena Hirsch, Juanita Daughtridge, and Lynda Rhyne.
Corinne grew up in the small farming town of Whitakers and moved to Rocky Mount after graduating from Women’s College (now known as UNC at Greensboro) in 1951. She married Howard Kelly Landis, Jr., affectionately known in the community as “Big Kel”, of Rocky Mount. They had two sons, Kel and Mark, and were heavily involved in their academics, sports, and civic engagements. Corinne was a schoolteacher in the Rocky Mount school system teaching business and typing for more than 40 years and enjoyed running into her former students around town through her life. She was known by her many friends, students, and family as a vivacious, care, and strong-willed woman who was always eager to help others and entertain. Corinne was an active member of her church for many decades and helped establish the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Columbarium upon the early death of her husband, Kel, in 1996.Corinne is survived by her son, Mark Landis and wife, Margaret; her grandchildren, Dorsey, H.K., Mac, Fred, and Henry; and her great-grandchildren, Capson and Walter.
A Special Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
A private Family Inurnment Service will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church Columbarium Garden.
The family would like to thank Corinne’s incredible team of caregivers who have shared their love and compassion over the last few years. In particular, Linda McNeil and Lizzie Johnson have gone above and beyond the call of duty and were dearly loved by Corinne and the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Corinne’s memory to the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
