Rocky Mount – Carol D. Patterson (Carolyn Wiggins Daughtridge Patterson), age 92, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2025, with her devoted husband, Pat Patterson, of 30 years by her side. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on January 16, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Albert Redden Wiggins and Carolyn Luella Morris Wiggins. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, William Gray Daughtridge, Sr.; and her son, William “Bill” Gray Daughtridge, Jr.
From a young age, Carol had an incredible sense of adventure and lived life to the fullest, riding horses and playing on the farm. She went on to earn her pilot’s license and achieved her commercial license and instrument ratings. She was also among a small group of female aviators called the “Petticoat Pilots.” Carol’s zest for life was ever-present. She was a Life Master duplicate bridge player, a state champion tennis player into her 70’s, a competitive dancer, and loved traveling the world, always seeking out new experiences. Carol had a gift for turning even the smallest moments into something special. Her scratch-made cakes and the stories she shared alongside them were a staple at family celebrations and a reflection of her love and joy in life. Even as her health declined, Carol’s wit, humor, and laughter remained as vibrant as ever. She was deeply loved by all who knew her, and her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she touched.
Above all else, Carol cherished her family and role as mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Oscar “Pat” Patterson; her daughter, Shawn Daughtridge Wallace (Ferdinand Neyrey III); her son, Gregory Scott Patterson (Ashley); her daughter-in-law, Partha Council Daughtridge; her five grandchildren, William “Gray” Daughtridge, III (Brenning), Meredith Daughtridge Archie (Charles), Grayson Wallace Northrop (Michael), Eliza Wallace Hall (Taylor), and Hunter Lee Patterson; her five great-grandchildren, Will, Mary Evelyn, Addison, Caroline, and Wells; her sister, Duryna Wiggins Tharrington; her niece, Wendy Tharrington; and many extended family members and dear friends.

Carol was a wonderful person, who I had the pleasure of knowing, as Bill & Shawn’s mom. She was always so gracious and welcoming. In later years, I saw her many times at Rolling on the River. She always had a smile and a kind word to say. Rest in peace.
