ROCKY MOUNT – Betty “Joyce” Nines, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.  Born in Nash County, NC on September 18, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Joe William Bailey and Lessie Patterson Bailey.  She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Mary Lee Joyner Bailey, who lovingly raised her; her husband of 51 years, James Grover Nines; her grandson, Joshua Earl Nines; her great-granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth Hinton; and her sisters, Easter Pearl Joyner, Elda Rae Lamm, Pattie Sue Gay, and Lois Ann Finch.

Joyce was a woman who embraced life with an open heart and an honest voice.  She had a deep love for good food, and one of her favorite places to dine was Hing Ta Restaurant, where she enjoyed sharing meals and making memories.  Joyce had a passion for flowers, finding joy in their beauty and vibrancy.  She never met a stranger—Joyce loved to mingle and chat, always eager to strike up a conversation.  She was known for her candid nature, never hesitating to speak her mind.  Her words were always genuine, and her presence could light up any room.  Joyce adored her family and cherished the time spent with those she loved. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures, whether it was visiting Myrtle Beach to go to musical theatre shows or going to Morehead where she loved to relax and spend time with family, or something as unexpected as riding through car washes, a small delight that always brought her happiness.  A lover of the arts, Joyce found great joy in attending theatre performances, especially at the Rudy Theatre.  Whether it was the music, the storytelling, or the shared experience with others, she appreciated the magic of live performances.  Her warmth, humor, and straightforward spirit will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Joyce is survived by her sons, James Mitchell “Mickey” Nines and wife, Linda, of Kenly, and Randall “Randy” Earl Nines and wife, Dianne, of Rocky Mount; her grandchildren, Angie Patterson, Tonya Aycock, Shanna Radford and husband, Clint, Tasha Wall and husband, Mike; her great-grandchildren, Zack Patterson, Payne Patterson, Shalyn Radford, Tyson Radford, Tanner Arrington, Bailee Aycock, Gracie Aycock, Michael Wall, Logan Wall, and Braydon Nines; her great great-grandson, Levi Patterson; her brothers, Joey Bailey and wife, Linda, and Danny Wayne Bailey and wife, Martha; her sister, Melba Jean Carroll; and several nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Rocky Mount Memorial Park with Pastor Steve Edmondson officiating.  Visitation with the family will be from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.
