August 21, 1934 ~ October 13, 2023

ROCKY MOUNT – Barbara Taylor Groome, age 89, passed away on Friday, October13, 2023. Born in Nash County, NC on August 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late E.K. Taylor and Edna Minchew Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Thomas “Tom” Hobson Groome, Jr.; her brothers, Tom. C. Taylor, Alvin Ray Taylor, and E.K. “Kit” Taylor; and his sisters, Edna Earle Avent and Peggy Taylor Batchelor. Barbara, a graduate of Red Oak High School, was a remarkable basketball player. Her talent and passion for the sport shone brightly during her time at the school, where she displayed remarkable athleticism. Even today, her unforgettable record of averaging 34 points per game stands as a testament to her extraordinary skills. Those years spent under the guidance of Coach Martin are cherished memories that will forever hold a special place in the hearts of her biggest supporters. Aside from basketball, Barbara also had a deep love for golf. Whenever she and Tom embarked on their travels, they always made sure to carve out time for a friendly game. It's worth noting that Barbara's golfing journey even includes a spectacular Hole in One, a remarkable achievement indeed. While Tom may have been the quieter of the two, Barbara was the epitome of sociability. She possessed an incredible ability to connect with anyone she encountered, never feeling like a stranger. Her friendly nature and warm personality endeared her to all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. Above all, Barbara held her family dear to her heart. Her love for them was immeasurable, and her absence will undoubtedly be deeply felt by those who were lucky enough to share their lives with her. Barbara is survived by her son, Thomas Hobson Groome, III and wife, Lisa, of Florence, SC; her daughter, Vickie Lynn Groome of Rocky Mount; her grandchildren, Thomas Joshua Groome and wife, Allie and Stella Kathleen Kapner and husband, Curtis; her great-grandson, Collin Craig Kapner; her sister, Jackie Hicks; and numerous nieces and nephews. 1. Vickie and Tom, wanted to share my condolences in the passing of ya’ll’s mom. Your parents were two of my most favorite customers at the grocery store vack in the late 60’s and 70’s. I would love when they came in. Prayers for all. Take care.
