ROCKY MOUNT - Winnifred "Winnie" Adcock Raper, age 78, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at Duke Raleigh Hospital in Raleigh surrounded by her family. Born in Vance County, NC on October 28, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Wilton Lee Adcock and Louise Poythress Adcock. She was also preceded in death by her brother, William "Bill" Adcock; and her sister, Dorothy "Dot" Renn.
Winnie was raised in Vance County and was the youngest of the four children. She looked up to her three older siblings, Bill, Carl, and Dot. Growing up she was always full of energy and life. She spent her childhood roaming their family-owned dairy farm where her main job was to swat the flies off cows. Winnie's commitment to her family was never-ending. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved spending time with her family and cherished their yearly summer trip to Ocean Isle Beach. She used her love of cooking every holiday and was always in the kitchen to lend a helping hand. Winnie was well known for her baby blankets and children's aprons that she made for everyone she knew and those aprons helped many children form a love of sharing time with their parents in the kitchen. She enjoyed playing cards with her card group and was active in her book club. She was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church where she was active in the Meals on Wheels program, playing in the handbells choir, and serving on various committees.
Winnie is survived by her husband of 38 years, Stephen "Steve" Wilson Raper; her daughters, Elizabeth Owen Jones (Robert) of Fayetteville; Rayna Poythress Owen of Rocky Mount, and Cathy Raper Chaffin (Doyte) of Evans, GA; her brother, Carl Adcock (Frances) of Bristol, TN; her grandchildren, Ashley Ingram (Tyler), Courtney Chaffin, and Tyler Chaffin; her great-grandchild, Brooks Ingram; and many nieces and nephews.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
Dear Winnie, You helped guide me through my teenage years. You showed me love, kindness, and compassion. I will always appreciate that and have never forgotten it. Thank you and God speed, Heather.
Winnie was an angel that walked among us. The world is a much better place because of her time here. My condolences to Steve, Elizabeth, Rayna and all of her sweet family. Prayers and love to you. Ruth Patterson
Very sorry to hear the sad news about Winnie. My wife Linda is Francis Day Adcock’s sister. I have known Winnie since 1963 when I first met my wife Linda. Winnie was a beautiful and very sweet and sincere Lady and I know her loss is difficult to her family and everyone who knew her, we are truly sorry to hear this terrible news.
Steve my condolences to you in the loss of your wife. I remember her from the annual meetings we went to. May God provide comfort to you and the family at this time. Brenda Daniels ElectriCities of N.C., Inc.
My heart is saddened by the passing of my friend Winnie. I met winnie in 1986, when we moved to Kinston, NC. She welcomed us to Kinston and made sure I knew what I needed to know. Her daughters became my babysitters. We became extended family. When we came to Rocky Mount, NC, it was as if we had never parted. I will always remember her, but especially at Christmas, for years she would make a beautiful Santa to go with my collection. Some years it was other pieces from her of her ceramic or pottery collection. She would support my children in their sports and would check in on me. I always knew who to call if I didn’t know. Quiet in nature, but she was a mover and a shaker. Thank you, Raper family, for including us in your lives. I will miss her too, but she will live in my heart forever.
Steve-We are so sorry to hear of the loss of Winnie. From all of us at United Way, our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
With love Beatrice
