Elm City - William “Bill” W. Haddon, Jr., age 73, passed away at Elm City Assisted Living on Sunday, April 24, 2016. Born in Nash County, NC on January 19, 1943, he was the son of the late William W. Haddon, Sr. and Rosa Lee Bulluck Haddon, and they loved their son dearly. He was also preceded in death by many aunts and uncles.
Bill was born in Rocky Mount where he continued to reside until declining health required that be become an assisted living home resident first at Essex Manor in Louisburg and then at Elm City Assisted Living. Bill attended Rocky Mount City Schools and graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High in 1961. During his elementary and secondary school years, Bill was a recipient of the American Legion award at Gorham School, was an active Boy Scout serving as a troop 7 patrol leader and earning Eagle Scout status, was a member of the order of Demolay, and was a member of the high school chess club, tennis team, and marching band. He particularly enjoyed taking his Boy Scout patrol to many camporees.
As he neared high school graduation, he was nominated by Congressman L. H. Fountain to attend the U. S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, but Bill ultimately decided to attend NC State University. While at State, Bill was a dedicated member of Alpha Phi Omega service Fraternity, Mu Beta Psi music Fraternity, the tennis team, and the marching band.
While attending college, Bill assisted his parents part-time with the family business, W. W. Haddon Wholesale. Upon his fathers death in 1967, Bill devoted himself fulltime to the business and became the sole owner in 1972 upon his mothers death. He continued to operate the business until 1982 when he sold it. Bill was active in the Downtown Association while running Haddon Wholesale, and he served a term as Secretary. After selling his business, he worked with several local businesses including Wilson Candy Co. until retiring prematurely in 1991 because of a medical disability.
Throughout his life, Bill was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church. For several years he drove the church van that transported attendees with transportation needs to and from Sunday services, and he also taught Sunday school. For the last years of his life Bill could not attend services, but he continued to embrace his faith.

Please accept our deepest condolences for your family’s loss.
I’ve known Bill and his family for many years. They are all very special people. Bill made an impact on all those he encountered Martha Lee
I was fortunate to be in Troop 7 with Bill. After high school, we would run into each other occasionally in Rocky Mount. After I moved from town mid 1970s we lost touch. For that I am sorry. He was a great guy and friend.
It was our privilege to share many visits with Mr. Bill. He was always so appreciative of the time we spent with him. He enjoyed our singing and sharing loving comfort with him. He was a man of faith in Jesus Christ and shared this with our chaplain. He was also a man of few words, but the ones he spoke were significant. We want to thank Mr. Bill and the family for allowing us the honor in taking care of him during his illness. He always said to us, Thank you for coming! We would like to say to him, Thank you for being the man you were, and to the family, Thank you for our visits.
