Shields Daughtridge Jones Harris, passed away on February 17, 2016. Born 91 years earlier on November 25, 1924, she lived her entire life in Rocky Mount. Here, she was blessed with a good life as the daughter of Clyde Daughtridge Jones and Millard Franklin Jones, whom she absolutely revered, and as the wife of the late Charles Cooper Harris, Jr., who she continued to wistfully call her “boyfriend” long after his death in 2008.
Mrs. Harris graduated from St. Marys High School and Sweet Briar College. She returned to Rocky Mount after college and married Mr. Harris in 1947. She was a stay at home mother, wife, and volunteer until, at the age of 55, she purchased Odyssey Travel Service, which she operated for 17 years.
Mrs. Harris was also predeceased by her sister, Shirley Jones Woodard and her husband, B. Bunn Woodard, as well as her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carolyn Harris Webb and The Hon. John Webb.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by her daughter Shields (Shebe) Daughtridge Harris, her son Charles (Chris) Cooper Harris, III, and her daughter Millard (Millie) Harris Walker and husband, Bill; grandchildren Shields Harris Carstarphen (Jennifer Knox), Charles Vinson Bowers ( Lauren), Harriett Belk Daughtridge Harris, and William Harris Walker; great-grandchildren, Ivy Caroline and Taylor Kathryn Bowers, and Charles Cooper and Alexander Shields Knox-Carstarphen; and daughter-in-law Harriett Belk Daughtridge Harris. In addition, she is survived by nieces Mary Will Woodard Burton and Caroline Webb Smart, and nephews William D. Webb, B. Bunn Woodard, and Millard J. Woodard. She was proud to be a niece and cousin to the descendants of her grandparents Lt. Gov. and Mrs. Elijah Longstreet Daughtridge of Rocky Mount and to her Richmond, VA, Jones family members as well as to be related by marriage to the large family of Mr. Harris parents, Beulah Joyner Harris and Charles C. Harris, Sr., who were also Rocky Mount natives.
The family would be remiss if they did not mention that, in addition to her family, Mrs. Harris was truly blessed to have been loved by so many people, of all ages, over her lifetime. She was always happy to be with you, always loved seeing you and hearing from you, particularly these last few years. Each of you, in your own special way, was a gift to her.
The family thanks Dr. Dan Crocker and his staff who attended Mr. and Mrs. Harris for decades, the staffs of Brookdale of Rocky Mount and Brekenridge Retirement Center for their care, and the staff of Nash Hospice who stood ready to see her to a comfortable end of life.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 20, at 5:00 - 7:00 PM and other times at the home of Millie and Bill Walker, 5001 Brassfield Drive. A memorial service for Mrs. Harris will be held on Sunday, February 21, at 2:00 PM at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount. The family will greet friends in the Parish Hall, following the service.
In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that you make a donation in her memory to the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, 231 N. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804, or to Nash Hospice, 2460 Curtis Ellis Drive, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
Arrangements entrusted to Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804. You may share memories and condolences with the family by visiting www.wheelerwoodlief.com.

Shields was a bright light to all who knew her. Such a classy, Southern Belle who never met a stranger. Absolutely beautiful inside and out.
So sad to hear of Shields death. What a beautiful lady. I met Shields when she was a resident of Sterling House. She as such an inspiration and encourager. She was always helping someone. It was a privilege and blessing to have her in my Bible Study I loved her dearly and will miss her sweet spirit and smile and will remember her always. My sincere condolences to her family and ask God to bless them during this great loss.
Oh what a marvelous lady who will be greatly missed by all that knew her. My Other Mother when I moved to Rocky Mount as a newly wed and then had the privilege to work for her at Odyssey Travel. Always the plumb line I needed, so compassionate and fun, inclusive, forgiving and loving no matter what. I will hold a multitude of fond memories of a true southern lady, Shields Harris, in my heart forever. God Bless you all sweet family in your time of grief and celebration of a life well lived.
