The Time that I had to drive him somewhere and when we got home he got out and kissed the ground. He didn’t like the way I drove. Love and miss you Pop.
I met Toody thru my husband Charley. The few times we met i really liked him. One thing that I always remembered was when I called him to invite him to the surprise 50th birthday party I was having for Charley. I knew he lived in Pennsylvania at the time and assumed coming all the way out to Eastern Long Island would be too much of an imposition but did want to include him. Well I didn’t get half way through when he interrupted me by saying I’ll be there just give me the date and time. He was not the least bit concerned about the distance. Toody made it and went back the same day. I don’t know many people who would be willing to make that kind of trip except someone who was a really good friend and wanted to be there. He was a great guy and will be missed. My sincere sympathy to Meryl and family. Mary Schiwautz
The trouble started about 1966 when I met Toody though Buddy Purcell. He gave me such a hard time about everything. Just kidding, we went to Kips Bay Boys Club together and were all on the swimming team along with Buddy, John Dolan, John Noonan. Toody became a staff member of Kips and headed up summer camp in Valhalla, NY. Though these early years our friendship grew and we became closer. So much so that I almost joined the Navy with him, under the buddy system , because we both thought we were going to be drafted. Toody returned from the service and we picked up right where we left off. Our friendship grew very strong as we both passed though all our ups and downs over the years. We always were able to confide in each other. I always knew how to make him laugh and I won’t forget it. A lot of laughs were at my expense of course but it was never mean spirited just fun. Years later I asked him why he broke my chops in the beginning so much, and he said that was to toughen you up to be my friend. So my dear friend keep laughing and watch over me. We will all miss you. God Bless in peace Charley
