Robert Germain Houghtlin, Jr., age 79, died peacefully on March 20, 2017 at his home in Nashville, NC, where he has lived since 2013. Bob was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1938 to Jane Gaddis Sanders and Robert Sr. He grew up in Evanston, IL and graduated second in his class from Evanston Township High School where he played sports, notably basketball. He attended Princeton University on a naval scholarship, played basketball, was a member of Cap and Gown, and graduated in 1960.
He entered the Navy as Ensign on active duty for three years. He resigned his regular commission as a Lt. Jr. Grade and accepted a Reserve Commission for 8 years. He left the service as a Lt. Commander.
In September 1963, Bob went to work for Leo Burnett Advertising in Chicago, IL. He started as a media trainee and worked his way along as a media buyer, media supervisor, and media director, finishing out his career as a Vice President Media Director. Except for 1970-71, working for Inter Public agencies in New York City, NY he spent his entire career at Burnett until 1992 when he took early retirement. Leo Burnett was at the forefront of an emerging advertising industry creating famous icons like The Marlboro Man, Tony the Tiger for Kellogg, The Dough Boy for Pillsbury. Over the years, Bob worked on Pillsbury, Green Giant, United Airlines, AC Spark Plugs, Samsonite Luggage, and Mattel. In one capacity or another Bob worked on the Phillip Morris business, Burnetts largest client, and was ultimately made a Vice President and headed the media group that worked entirely on the Phillip Morris business. It was the golden age of advertising when shaking a persons hand was his bond, and loyalty to the company was a given. Bobs reputation in the business has lived on and he remained grateful for the life style, perks and friendships Burnett provided him and his family.
Bob moved to a home overlooking the 4th hole of the Jack Nicolas designed golf course at Governors Club, Chapel Hill, NC and pursued the love of the game. A fine golfer all his life, competing and winning along the way, with a hole in one in Hawaii to his credit, Bob contributed long hours to the Board of Directors at Governors Club, 1997-2001, and was elected President of the board for several years. It was a time in his life when he exercised the accumulation of his years in business and leadership skills.
Bob, a lifelong Episcopalian served as a boy chorister and acolyte while growing up. He served as an Acolyte master twice, and Senior Warden twice. He headed a Liturgical Commission committee, served on the search committee for a new rector and a discernment committee for a candidate for holy orders. He enjoyed the designation as the oldest acolyte in the diocese serving at the altar for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Stepheny Forgue Houghtlin; his brothers, Charles Benjamin Houghtlin of New Lebanon, NY; David Christopher Houghtlin of Atlanta, GA.; John Jeffery Houghtlin (deceased) and their families; his children, Deborah Ann Houghtlin Roesner; Robert G. Lit a candle in memory of Robert Bob Germain Houghtlin
We have so many wonderful memories of Bob but one of my favorite times together is when Stepheny, Bob, Gene & Dev Weeks & Linda & Larry went to visit Gordon Hoke our ETHS high school teacher in Decatur, IL. What a wonderful day that was for all of us. Sending love and prayers to you all for many happy memories, peace and comfort at this difficult time. Love you, Linda & Larry
Stepheny, I’ve come to know Bpb through your love for him I pray that love will continue to sustain and encourage you as your enthusiasm and love inspires us all.
Stepheny, I am thinking of you and your family at this sad time. I’m hoping your Bob and my Les have finally meet each other and are chatting about their Navy lives and Garden Club wives! With much love, Debby
Houghtlin Family members, my condolences to you all, I go way back with Bob in my nine years at the LB,Co.in 1965-74. He was truly a professional business man, a gentleman competitor on the golf course in Glenview GC and a great human being. We both shared being in the Navy and Marine Corps reserve before the Vietnam War. We often joked that he was 6 months older than me 6-17-38. We went our separate ways in life and business pursuits but did not forget the foundation we experienced in our early career at LB,Co,Inc. I am sorry we didn’t reconnect in our later years. My love to his huge family members. God bless you all, John Foote ( former AE on the Philip Morris account).
I want to send my deepest sympathy to the family of Robert Germain Houghtlin Jr. The bible tells us we can gain comfort from God, especially during times of sorrow. We pray to our heavenly father for help to cope with the sorrow felt from the death of a loved one. By prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving, let your petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your mental powers by means of Christ Jesus. Philippians 46 May you find comfort by relying on our heavenly father and learning more about the blessings of God’s kingdom. Local ministry volunteer
I first met Bob in our second grade class at Lincoln School, Evanston. Our teacher was Mrs. Boncelet. Some classmates were Martha Faust, Mary Ann Burnside, Henry Hickey, and Byron Bronston. Our happy group of friends stayed together for Miss Zielke, Miss Johnson, and Mrs. Hamm (6th grade teacher). Bob was loved dearly by all the girls– undisputed Lothorio of our grade. A favorite childhood memory of mine is going sledding with Bob one winter afternoon, on one of the only hills nearby– in mostly-flat Evanston. Also, sitting in the desk behind his. . . in fourth grade. We both sang in choirs at St. Luke’s Cathedral. I went on to New Trier H.S. and Vassar, while he attended Evanston H.S. and Princeton. I last saw him at the Yale-Princeton game in November of 1957, at Princeton. . . when we chatted amiably, and promised to keep in touch. (But didn’t!) These memories. . .a lovely bunch of bright splotches in the many-colored pastiche of our growing-up years.
