Nancy Powell Henry

June 13, 1918 ~ February 25, 2018

ROCKY MOUNT - Nancy Powell Henry, age 99, passed away on Sunday, February 25, 2018. She was born on June 13, 1918 to Irene Thomas Powell and Robert Henry Powell in Dublin, GA. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, M. Webster Henry; and grandson, Chad Seymour. At the age of ten, she moved with her parents to Rocky Mount where her father opened an office equipment store. Nancy attended Rocky Mount City Schools followed by studies at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA. Just prior to Japans attack on our country, she married her high school sweetheart, Webster Henry. He went on to serve his country in the Marine Corps and saw action in the South Pacific, while his bride waited in Rocky Mount. After the war, he returned to Rocky Mount for them to start a family and new life. Nancy's death marks the passing of one of the last great ladies of West Haven. In the post war years, she was active in her childrens lives and schools and in the community. She was a member of the Rocky Mount Garden Club, a patron of the Braswell Memorial Library and a member of the Benvenue Country Club. Nancy and Webster were Charter members of Lakeside Baptist Church maintaining active memberships until their deaths. They enjoyed boating with their family and friends on the Pamlico River. In her later years, Nancy made many trips to her beloved England and to the Chelsea Flower Show there. Gardening, tending to and sharing her prized camellias was a source of much joy. Her positive and indomitable spirit was an example to many. She was indeed a southern lady who valued home and hearth and believed firmly that there is no substitute for good manners. Nancy is survived by her four children, Marshall W. Henry, Jr. (Gayle) of Rocky Mount and Lake Gaston, NC, Robert Powell Henry of Panama City Beach, FL, Sharon Cooper Stone (Tom) of Green Mountain, NC, and Thomas L. Henry (Barbara) of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren, Mary Chapman Knight (Gary), Max Cooper (Jessica), Amelia Henry Kiechle (David), and Kathryn Henry (Justin Smith); eight great-grandchildren, Craig and Nicholas Estes, Sydney and Abby Seymour, Mallory and Meredith Knight, Atticus Cooper and Michael Kiechle; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. 3. I only briefly knew Nancy but anyone could tell immediately upon meeting her that she was a Grand lady in the old southern tradition. My brother Paul Cuthbertson, had the honor of attending to Nancy for several years when she decided to move next door in Panama City Beach, Florida for a brief time. He regaled us with many wonderful stories of her stay there. My parents Rufus and Jean Cuthbertson, once travelled to Hawaii with my brother Paul, and Bob and his parents. To all accounts, they had a wonderful time. I am sure there will be a hole in her community now that she has gone Home to be with her heavenly father. My sincerest sympathies to her family and especially to Bob who is very dear to our family. Much Love, Beth Cuthbertson Gooden
