Wilmington - Matthew Douglas Starr, age 43, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 16, 2016. Born in Tarboro, NC on January 21, 1973, he was the son of W. Douglas Starr and the late Linda Lauder Starr.
An intellectual by nature, Matt was an Eagle Scout, a graduate of Rocky Mount Academy and further went to graduate from NC State University, College of Design. His love for the arts would later take him to Winter Park, Florida where he would graduate Valedictorian of his class from Full Sail University Film School. His enjoyment of the arts and ability to share his passion with others would carry him throughout both his professional and personal life. In all aspects of the lives he touched, Matt was well known for his captivating personality and ability to bring laughter to those around him. During his tenure in the restaurant business, it was no secret that his talent for being a gourmet chef and his commanding presence inside any kitchen was one that he favored. Further, his reputation for being a film enthusiast would always draw him into conversations regarding upcoming films and productions. His love for others was evidenced by his “servants heart,” taking every opportunity to minister to those in need. His impact knew no barriers. From an orphanage in Peru to friends and family spanning the globe, he did what Matt did best by helping those in his life in any way he could. This would lead him to owning his own Concierge Service and becoming a personal assistant to many families around the Wilmington area. A loving son, cherished brother, friend to more than one can imagine, Matt Starr will forever be remembered and always be missed.
Matt leaves behind to cherish his memory, his father, W. Douglas Starr and his wife, Pam, of Rocky Mount; sister, Rachel Truslow Starr of Atlanta, GA; step-siblings Meredith Switzer and her husband, Jeff, of Weaverville, Jessica Page and her husband, Dr. Chris Weed, of Durham, and Graham Page and his wife, Sonia, of Alameda, CA. He is also survived by his three aunts Barbara L. McMichael and her husband, Jule, of Reidsville, JoAnne Lauder of New York, NY, and Alice S. Tingle and her husband, Kelly, of Kinston, four cousins and families, six nephews and one niece.

To the Starr family, my thoughts are with you every day. I married into an old group of Matt’s close friends and heard so many wonderful things about him for a few years before I finally got to meet him myself. Of course, Matt didn’t know a stranger, so as soon as I met him, he made me feel like we had so much in common and that our great conversation could go on forever. His kindness was exceptional, and it wasn’t even the only exceptional thing about him, but it’s what I’ll remember him most for. Please accept my family’s deepest condolences.
I was Matt’s 4th grade teacher and knew then he was exceptional. He played the lead in a class miniplay as Psalty…the Bible book. His joyful demeanor was contagious. I was so happy to reconnect on Facebook in his adult life and share his amazing outlook on life. Peace dear Matt. You and your family are loved and prayed for to receive every holy grace needed….. Matt was a beautiful and caring soul who made a difference in the lives of so many people. He is now a bright Starr in the sky above next to his beautiful mother shining down on all of his family and friends forever. My deepest sympathies to his family during this difficult time ~Krista Marnella

The Tobias Family would like to extend sincere condolences to the Starr Family. May God bless you all in this time of loss and grief.
Matt was more than a nephew to us, more like a son and brother . We so enjoyed his visits to Reidsville …lots of fun times, laughs and mischief. {yard of month sign and climbing out of windows}. And special trips to the beach for Memorial Day and Labor Day over the years.-with lots of fishing trips and boat adventures. Some of the things he loved his family, many friends, Taco, collards, stew with extra butterbeans, traveling, figuring out how to get the most out of what he spent [esp. airline miles], solving cryptoquotes, good tea, watching birds, Facebook, cooking creatively, fine restaurant meals, playing tricks and of course, helping others, sharing unselfishly, reaching out to the needy and hurting. He had a huge loving, empathetic, grateful heart. What a blessing to have known him and have him in our family. Matt, we miss you so much and we love you, love you, love you. My friend, Matt Starr was always the most kind person. He was so supportive of my writing and was always willing to read over things and give me his great feedback. He had a way of making you believe even more in your dreams because he believed in you. He was one of those friends that if you didn’t see for awhile and when you saw him again it was like no time had passed. I know that’s what it will be like when I see him again…to the family, I know he will always be nearby you and all your loved ones.
