March 5, 1927 ~ January 30, 2021

UPDATE: NEW LIVESTREAM LINK FOR JACKS SERVICE: https://studio.restream.io/guest/azNuYnhkeiVS_RZB4kmxljUBFi9j_BY?event= RALEIGH - Heaven received a kind and gentle soul on January 30, 2021, when Jesse Hopkins "Jack" Avent passed away just a month short of his 94th birthday. Jack was born in the Nash County community of Aventon to the late Jesse Lee Avent and Sarah Ellen Matthews Avent. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Annie Lee Freeman, Robert Avent, Jim Avent and Mary Ellen Mobley, and their spouses. Jack and Vernon Dozier were married on January 8, 1950 and lived together in the Aventon community for most of their married life. Except for four years in Nashville, where they were welcomed with wide open arms, they lived in Aventon and devoted their lives to their families, to Fishing Creek Baptist Church, and to the community. Jack was a man of few words, but of many acts of great kindness. He had a fabulous laugh and told many stories and jokes that made others laugh as well. His integrity and work ethic were without equal as he farmed, operated a country store and worked in the fertilizer business with his good friend, the late George Griffin. When Jack wasn't working, he and Vernon could be found at Doak Field at Dail Park, cheering on the NC State Wolfpack baseball team that his son Elliott has coached for 24 years. Baseball was one of Jack's lifelong passions. He was a lifetime fan of the NY Yankees and the Wolfpack. Two highlights of his life were getting to see the Yankees play and to be in Omaha in 2013 with the Wolfpack. In his younger years, he also enjoyed golf, company trips with Vernon, and taking care of their house and yard. Into his mid-80s, he could be found on his riding lawn mower, waving to neighbors as they drove by and blew their horns! His last trip to Doak Field was for a scrimmage of the 2021 team in October 2020. Jack has entered into the peace of life eternal. He will now live on in the hearts of those who cherish their memories of him in the countless ways he loved them. Jack will live on through the treasure of friends and his dear family who loved him: Vernon, his devoted wife of 71 years of Raleigh; his three beloved children, Marsha Avent Van Hecke (Jim) of Raleigh, Susan Avent Rackley (Randy) of Holly Springs, and Elliott Avent (Krista) of Raleigh; and Granddaddy's four grandchildren, who adored him and are dedicated to now doubly loving their Nana: Caitlin Van Hecke (Brad Howell) of Asheville, Lindsey Rackley Button (Gabe) of Fuquay-Varina, Justin Van Hecke (Jody) of Bluffton SC, and Mark Rackley (Mackenzie) of Raleigh; and Jack Jack's precious great-grands who he was delighted to get to meet and hug on: Parker Van Hecke, Quinn Button, Brooks Van Hecke, Maddox Button and Jack Finn Van Howell. Jack is also survived by a loving bunch of nieces, nephews and friends too numerous to count, many of whom also consider themselves "family". A Funeral Service to celebrate Jack's life will be held on Saturday, February 13, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Burial will follow the service at Fishing Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family in an extra effort to keep the safety of themselves and others a priority, will also be having a virtual service. It will be live streamed at https://studio.restream.io/guest/azNuYnhkeiVS_RZB4kmxljUBFi9j_BY?event= During the COVID-19 pandemic, the family is requesting the need for social distancing and wearing of masks due to health concerns faced around our nation at this time. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. We are so sorry to learn of your loss, but rejoice with you in knowing that he is in his eternal Heavenly home. Praying for peace and strength that only God can give.

  2. Vernon, I was so sorry to hear of the death of Jack and also the death of Ernestine a few days prior. Hope you are doing well during this time of grief. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My memory bank has brought back a few memories of the 40’s and 50’s that included you, Ernestine and especially Pattie Mae. She made sure I always had a ride to all church activities for kids and I’m really thankful for that. As a grandma I realize the importance of that now more than ever. I pray that the coming days bring you comfort, peace and understanding that only God can give. Love and prayers.

  3. My favorite memory with Nana and Jack would be when Marsha would take Caitlin, Justin and I to Rocky Mount to visit in their old station wagon. The very back seat was facing out the back window and of course we would get in trouble by making faces and mooning cars, in the meantime Marsha is driving and reading her book (she is a genuis, never figured out how she did that). I loved going to Nana and Jacks for several reasons, Nana`s goood cookin, jumping on the trampoline, Jacks stories and spending time with two of the kindest souls Ive ever known.

  4. I did not know Mr. Jack & Mrs. Vernon very well, but I do remember how kind they were to my son and the guys who hunted on his land. I remember taking my son(Steve) to their house in Nashville to check about hunting and they would come out to the car and talk, good conversations and laughs, Steve would render some kindness back to them, and talk about what a good man he was. Many thanks and strength to family, I pray.

  5. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Vernon and the family. I have such fond memories of both Mr. Jack and Mrs. Vernon and their dedication to the Church.

  6. Vernon, You know how highly I think of you and Jack. Even though Jack now resides in heaven, I am sure he is still one of God’s choicest servants there just as he was here. I think of you often and pray you are happy in Raleigh with family. We will see each other soon. My love to you and prayers to God for you…. Sonja

  7. Uncle Jack was a true gem – and will be missed by all who knew him. He was a man of few words but had a twinkle in his eye and a sly little laugh – and he didn’t mind saying what was on his mind. I will miss him on this Earth, but know that he is enjoying a true family reunion up in Heaven. Look forward to joining that group one day myself, as it is truly an honor to be an Avent! I love you, Uncle Jack – now and forever. XOXO

  8. What a nice nice man. Always had a kind word to say. my thoughts and prayers are with the family Marsha, Susan, and Elliott and of course with Mrs. Avent

  9. Heaven has gained a Special Angel! We will miss our dear friend. Much love and prayers to this Special family. ❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏

  10. Jack was one of the nicest people I have ever met. Whenever I would see him, he always made sure to say hello and inquire as to how I was doing. Our condolences go to Vernon, Coach Avent, and Jack’s entire family.

  11. We will miss Mr. Avent. He was the high light of our many good memories from all our NC State Baseball Games. We always looked for Mr. Avent and never left a game without speaking to him. He reminded me of my Father. It is something their generation had we will long miss. The Avent’s were fortunate to have a Dad like Mr. Avent. Words cannot describe this but only feelings in ones heart can only do. What better can one do while on this earth than leave a good feeling in ones heart. Mr. Avent will be missed. Special thoughts…….Winnie and Sam Sasser we have many good thoughts from our conversations.

  12. Dear Avent Family, It is with heartfelt & dear memories that we extend our sincere condolences to you and yours in the loss of your dear patriarch of the Avent Family. Mr. & Mrs. Avent became ardent fans and friends of the Louisburg College Fraziers when Elliott became assistant coach to Russ a long time ago and we shall always have the fondest memories of their friendships. God bless the Avent Family in this time of grief & reflection. Blessings & Love Aplenty. Clara & Russ Frazier

  13. We cherish more than 60 years of precious memories with this loving family. We send our prayers, love, and deepest sympathy . Love, Ted and Myrna Duffey and Donya Snow.

  14. I am so sorry to learn of your Dad’s passing. I know the pain of losing your dad. I also know of the peace and comfort you find in knowing he is with Jesus.
