James “Jim” Edward Callahan, Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT - James "Jim" Edward Callahan, Jr. age 96, passed away on Friday, May 28, 2021. Born in Essex County, MA on October 28, 1924, he was the son of the late James Edward Callahan, Sr. and Agnes Murphy Callahan. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances Ringland Callahan; his grandson, Liam Samuel Callahan; and his brother, John Francis Callahan. Jim married the love of his life, Mary Frances on April 23, 1949 and had four beautiful children. He graduated from St. Johns Preparatory School in Danvers, MA. Jim graduated with the class of 1948 from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. Upon his graduation, he spent eight years on sea duty including a hitch in the Asian Theatre in the Korean War. Later in 1955, Jim signed on with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and served as a Special Agent in Chicago, IL, Kinston and Rocky Mount. He has resided in North Carolina since 1957. After retirement, Jim's served as a Security Officer for Peoples Bank for approximately eight years in Rocky Mount. He also enjoyed teaching Criminal Justice courses at Nash Community College. In his later years, Jim volunteered his time to read to the blind in the DERRS ' program (Down East Radio Reading Services, Inc.). He was an avid Red Sox fan and a golf enthusiast and had a great sense of humor. Jim was a family man, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him, but his loving spirit will never be forgotten as he was everything to his family. Jim is survived by his daughters, Kathleen Ann Jacobs and her husband, Steven of Commerce TWP., MI and Patty Callahan Koenig and her husband, Bill of Nashville; his sons, James Edward Callahan, III of Durham and William Kenneth Callahan and his wife, Carol of Fayetteville; his grandchildren, James Richard Manning and his wife, Ashley, Justin Manning, James Jacobs, Elizabeth Jacobs, Mary Jacobs, Patricia Jacobs, John Jacobs, Nathan English, Colby Callahan, Jacob English and Caeley Callahan; his great grandchildren, Carter, Caroline and Jackson Manning; his sister-in-law, Gloria Marie Callahan; his nieces, Nancy Driscoll and her husband, Jack, Janet Hamilton and her husband, Kenneth and Sheila McDonough and her husband, John. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 331 Hammond Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with Father Tim Meares celebrating. Burial will follow the Mass at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM.   1. Kathy, I am so sorry to hear about the death of your father. I will always have fond memories of him. I am going to be out of town so will miss the visitation and funeral mass. I would not miss either if I were going to be here. Also, sorry I will miss seeing you.

  2. So sorry to hear of Mr. Callahan’s passing. He and his wife were life long friends of my parents Frank and Marie Martin. They grew up together in Lawrence, Massachusetts.   3. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Callahan family, especially Patty, Kathy, and Billy, and James who grew up with our children on the same block. It was a great neighborhood.   4. Sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Callahan. Mr. Callahan was a long time member of our October Myrtle Beach group along with his son Jim. He was a great guy to play golf with. He was definitely missed when he had to drop out due to age, which was in his eighties. Condolences to Jim and all of the Callahan family. May God be with all of you in this time of sorrow.
