Dorothy “Dot” Whittemore Snead

ROCKY MOUNT - Dorothy "Dot" Whittemore Snead, age 87, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018. Born in Mecklenburg County, VA on March 20, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Lennie Whittemore and Alma Davis Whittemore. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Floyd Coolidge Snead; son, Floyd Snead, Jr.; and brother, Lennie Whittemore. Dot graduated from Johnston-Willis Nursing School in Richmond, VA in 1951 and served many years as a Registered Nurse working in South Hill, VA; Raleigh, NC; St. Petersburg, FL; and Rocky Mount, NC. She helped open South Hill Community Hospital assisting with the first ER patient, the first operation, and the first baby delivery at the hospital. She worked there from the opening in 1954 till 1959. She worked at Rex Hospital in Raleigh from 1962 till 1967. She worked at Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg from 1968 till 1972. She joined Nash General Hospital in January 1973 and retired as Nursing Manager of OB/GYN in December 1995. She was a long-time member of Arlington Baptist Church. Dot leaves behind to cherish her memory, son, Paul Snead and wife, Janet, of Charlotte. She is also survived by grandchildren, Jason Snead and wife, Jessica, of Cary, Susan Webb and husband, Kevin, of Wilson, and Ashley Snead of Greensboro; great-grandchildren, Eli Webb, Bekah Webb, and Gracie Webb of Wilson, Simon Snead and Clara Snead of Cary; daughter-in-law, Helen Snead of Greensboro; brother-in-law, Gerald Snead of South Hill, VA; and sister-in-law, Martha Whittemore of Greensboro. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Arlington Baptist Church, 1500 Bethlehem Road, Rocky Mount, NC 27803 with Pastor Rusty Mauldin officiating. A Committal Service will follow at 3:00 PM at Crestview Memorial Park, La Crosse, VA. The family will receive friends and relatives on Sunday, October 21, 2018 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home.   4. So very sorry for your loss. Dot was manager of 2nd floor when I worked at Nash. She had a wonderful sense of humor and was a great leader for her staff.

  7. I am so sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. There is a very comforting scripture found at Isaiah 258. It says that soon Jehovah will swallow up death forever and that he will wipe away all of the tears. So we can look forward to a time when death will be done away with forever. I hope that this scripture can bring some comfort during this time.

  9. So sorry to hear of Dot leaving us. I am sad for family and friends, but at the same time, full of joy that she is face to face with her Lord and Savior. She will be missed by many. The Lord is your peace and strength at this time. Lean on Him and He will give you courage. Prayers.

  10. Dot as I usually called her was a dear friend. Charlie and I moved in the apartment next to them in 1960. Paul was about 3 at the time and Floyd jr. was maybe 8. We spent many times in each of our homes, wherever that was. The last couple of years we did not see as much, but talked on the phone. I will miss her. She is always in my thoughts. Rest in peace my dear friend.

  13. I did Ms. Dot’s hair for several years before she went to rest home. I loved her so much. I had remember her from when my son was born, she was with me . She was wonderful. She and Mr. Floyd ( who I cut his hair too) came to Nash General the day my husband Jerry was having cancer surgery. They were so kind. She and Floyd were two beautiful people, heaven has 2 angels now. Cherish their memories as I know you will. I will always smile when I think of them. I loved them both Diane Baines Nashville N.C.

  14. It was my privilege to know and work with Dot at Nash General Hospital from 1976 until her retirement. She brought so much heart, soul and passion to her work. Heaven certainly has certainly gained another angel.
