ROCKY MOUNT - Charles Ellington "Charlie" Thorne, age 88, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016. Born in Nash County, NC on October 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Spencer T. Thorne and Anne Cox Thorne. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Lois Johnson Thorne; brothers, Dr. Edward Young Cox Thorne; and Spencer T. Thorne, Jr.; and sister, Sarah T. Connelly.
Charlie graduated from Rocky Mount High in 1945. During his high school years, he lettered in basketball, baseball and football and was co-captain his senior year of the Blackbirds basketball team. After high school graduation, he went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to major in history. He was drafted into the US Army. He was assigned to Shephard Field, TX for basic training. He was then assigned to Weather Observation School in Chanute Field, IL where he completed a 12 week training school before he was deployed to Okinawa. When he was discharged, he returned to Chapel Hill and graduated with a BA degree in history in 1951. While at UNC, he played on the basketball team. For two years, he was the co-captain and in 1951, he received the Foy Roberson Award, an award that is presented to the most inspirational player that was voted upon by his teammates and coaches. Charlie set a record in 1950 scoring seven points in just 15 seconds that still stands today. He was also a member of the Zeta Psi Fraternity and was also treasury of the Freshman Friendship Counsel during his freshman year. Upon graduation from UNC, he began working with W. B. Lea Tobacco Company from July 1951 to April 1954 at which time he went to work for Britt Transportation Company. In 1958, with his vested interest in Britt Transportation Company, he bought them out, and renamed the business Cargocare Transportation Company and the business is still in operation today. Charlie was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church; member of Benvenue Country Club since 1952; member of the Kiwanis Club for 10 years; member of the Elks Club for 35 years; and was a past member of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army. Charlie cherished his time spent with family; especially days spent at their beach home in Pine Knoll Shores, NC. He also enjoyed traveling around the world with his wonderful wife, Lois. Charlie was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all who knew him. As everyone knows, Charlie was an avid Carolina Tar Heel Fan!

I don’t know Charlie (or Chahlie, as his friends would say) from his days of shooting the rock at UNC, but had the joy of cutting up with him when I courted his lovely daughter, and good friend, Susan. A few times he almost whupped me even without my Dads permission. Lots of people dont know that he used to work for my Grandfather at his company, W.B. Lea Tobacco Co. In fact, he was such a great worker, and a great guy, my Grandfather gave him some seed money to start the very successful company he ran for years. He was quite a gracious, and decent man, and father. I know his family will miss him so.
Mr. Thorne was a wonderful man; who always had a smile on his face. I have so many memories of Mr.Thorne (he will truly be missed). He’s with his precious love Mrs. Thorne.
As a backdoor neighbor growing up, I will always remember Charlie Thorne’s warm personality and smile. His love for his wife, Lois and children, Terri, Susan, Cathy and Chuck was always obvious. I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting his grandchildren, but I’m sure that he had that same love for them. Love and prayers for your family.
My condolences to all. May your special memories be a comfort to you at this time. I’m only a second cousin from Rocky Mount. I had much admiration for ‘Charlie’. He was a great guy! .

Cathy, our hearts are so broken over the loss of your father. He was truly blessed to have you as his daughter. You always put his needs first. Your dedication to his care and comfort are a true testament of a love a daughter has for her father. I know he is together again with your mother and he is happier than ever. He was a genuine sweetheart. You and your family were blessed to have him as your father. Know you served him well on this earth , you were a blessing to him also. We love you dearly and will be here if you need anything. Love you, mean it! Crystal, Shawn and Carson Blackburn
When I moved to Rocky Mount at the age of 11 years old, we moved next door to Charlie’s grandmother and Charlie and his siblings. They were wonderful neighbors and I have loved Charlie since that time which now has been a long time as I will have a birthday tomorrow as his service is being conducted. He was so special and so faithful to our church. Always had a smile on his face and a good word for every one. He will be sorely missed but know that he i back with his loving wife, Lois and happy again. We love you very much, Charlie. God Bless your family. We hold you in our hearts. Love, Adelaide

To all the family, I was very honored to have known both Mr and Mrs Thorne. I always thought a lot of both. And, they always returned great warmest feelings anytime we bumped into one another later in life. I was saddened circumstances didn’t allow my final respect to both them and to you for the visitation and or services. Please know thoughts and prayers for you Terri,Susan,Cathy, and Chuck. I’ll pray for strength, wisdom, peace and understanding in the coming days. To God Be The Glory that Mr Thorne not in any pain or suffering and with his beautiful bride Mrs Thorne.
Prayers to Jeff and Chucks family. His laughter will be missed by all Johnny & Jason
