Betsy Bulluck Strandberg

January 15, 1926 ~ January 10, 2019

Betsy Bulluck Strandberg passed away on January 10, 2019. She was born on January 15, 1926 in Rocky Mount, NC, the daughter of the late Josephine Jenkins Bulluck and Donnell Oren Bulluck. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard H. Strandberg, Jr.; a brother, William Reuel Bulluck; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Tyler Strandberg. Betsy grew up in Rocky Mount in the Englewood neighborhood. She attended Woman's College (now UNC-Greensboro) from 1944-1948 where she was President of the Student Body and elected everlasting President of the Class of '48. She married Howard H. Strandberg, Jr. in 1948. She taught school in Wilson and Durham and moved home to Rocky Mount with Stran after he finished at UNC-Chapel Hill. Betsy and Stran were founding members of St. Andrew's Episcopal church where Betsy played the organ and sang in the choir for many years, volunteered with the altar guild, was a Circle leader, President of the Churchwomen, and on the Vestry. She also served on the boards of the Rocky Mount Arts Center, Braswell Library, Rocky Mount Children's Museum, Carolinas Gateway Partnership and Coastal Plains Heart Association. She was President of the Junior Guild, President of the Board of Visitors at Wesleyan College and Chair of "A Day for Wesleyan". After Stran's untimely death in 1979, Betsy went to work at Standard Insurance and Realty. She served as Chairwoman of their board until 1984. During her tenure at Standard, Betsy was elected the first woman President of the Chamber of Commerce. She was also the first woman member of the Rocky Mount Kiwanis Club and one of the first women to serve on the Board of Peoples and RBC Centura Banks. Betsy received an Alumni Award from UNC-G in 1988. She was inducted into the Twin Counties Hall of Fame in 2018. Betsy loved the beach and spent many summers at Virginia Beach with her extended family. She enjoyed traveling and had memorable trips to France, England and Australia. She was a willing sitter for her seven grandchildren, and was not daunted about taking four or five at the same time. She often played piano for them and sang songs and hymns with them. She attended their sports events, school plays and graduations. There are many happy memories of Christmas time pictures of all the grandchildren sitting on the hearth with their "Gran". A walk on the beach or backyard window gazing with Gran was always a treat because she knew the names of all the shells and all the birds. Betsy is survived by her daughter, Betsy Strandberg Hackney, and husband, Joe; son, Howard H. Strandberg, III and wife, Sharon; son, J. Buckley Strandberg; grandchildren, Wesley Strandberg, and wife, Keller; Daniel Hackney, and wife, Katrina; Will Hackney; Catharine Strandberg Leggett and husband, Chauncey; Blair Strandberg Tomlinson and husband, Buch; and Josie Strandberg; and great grandsons, Hunter and Jack Strandberg, and Jack Tomlinson. She is also survived by her brother, Don Bulluck, Jr. and wife Martha, sisters-in-law, Susan Lea and husband Bruce; and Penn Fulton; and brother-in-law, Bill Strandberg, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Many thanks to Stacey and Felicia Johnson who have lovingly cared for Betsy during the last few years as her health declined and to Hospice and Doug Boyette and his team. I am so sorry to hear of Betsy’s death but know she left you with much love and memories beyond compare. I will tell you losing her will not necessarily become easier as days go by – a song, a dish, a movie, a phone call almost anything can spring a memory and tears – but the memories become sweeter and the laughter quicker. Enjoy those memories and relive them often. I cannot think of St. Andrews without thinking of Betsy who reminds me of you and so the memories flow. My love to each of you. 14. To The Family I am sorry about your loss the Bible is very comforting to all of us during our time of loss. I away think about the scripture John 528,29 which states all those in the memorial tombs will come back to life again. Also I think of Revelation 213,4 where it read death will be no more it will be the thing of the pass. These and other scripture helps me to deal with my losses. With My Deepest Sympathy
