Betty Jean Johnson Leonard

March 29, 1953 ~ August 24, 2026

Born in: Nash County, NC
Resided in: Rocky Mount, NC

ROCKY MOUNT – Betty Jean Johnson Leonard, age 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026. Born in Nash County, NC on March 29, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Haywood Johnson and Mildred Christine Woodcock Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Haywood Johnson.

Betty is survived by her husband of 50 years, Raymond “Macon” Leonard, Jr.; her son, Raymond Macon Leonard, III “Lenny” and wife, Laura; her granddaughters, Abigail Leonard and EllaGrace Leonard; her brother, Hilton Earnest Johnson and wife, Lisa; and her best friend, who was like a sister, Lou Carson.

Betty was, above all else, a devoted caregiver. Her heart was boundless, and she spent a lifetime taking care of family, friends, and anyone in need, including the beloved family pets, like her cherished dog Brandy, who were showered with just as much tenderness. She held a deep, unwavering love for her husband, Macon. During the years he worked swing shifts, she would wake up in the middle of the night just to cook him dinner, wrap him in a hug, and share a quiet conversation before slipping back to bed. Her family was her world, and she would often remind them of that bond, lovingly saying to Lenny and Macon, “I don’t know what I would do without you two.”

Known to be soft-hearted and quick to shed a tear at the drop of a hat, the absolute happiest tears she ever cried were when her grandbabies arrived. Betty cherished every single moment with her granddaughters. Whether it was cozying up to watch The Swan Princess with Abigail or making hilarious videos on Daddy’s iPad with EllaGrace, she loved being right in the middle of their joy and world.

A deeply caring woman, her love extended naturally into her kitchen. Famous for her culinary talents, no family gathering was complete without her multi-layer chocolate cake, signature banana pudding, or legendary Southern fried chicken. But to those who knew her best, her comforting chicken and rice possessed a magic all its own, a dish with the power to heal no matter what ailed you.

When she wasn’t in the kitchen surrounded by her beloved collection of cookbooks (that she never read!), Betty could often be found lost in a good book or with yarn in hand, lovingly crocheting beautiful blankets and gifts for those she loved.

She leaves behind a rich legacy of warmth, compassion, and cherished memories. Her laughter, sweet spirit, and steady, comforting presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

To those I love and those who love me,

When I am gone, release me, let me go.

I have so many things to see and do,

You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears,

Be thankful for our many beautiful years.

I gave to you my love, you can only guess

How much you gave to me in happiness.

I thank you for the love you each have shown,

But now it’s time I traveled on alone.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,

Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

It’s only for a time that we must part,

So bless the memories within your heart.

I won’t be far away, for life goes on,

So if you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near,

And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear

All my love around you soft and clear.

And then, when you must come this way alone,

I’ll greet you with a smile, and say “Welcome Home.”

I Love You Momma, more than words can say, but you can go home now; we will be ok.

  6. Macon and Lenny, Betty Jean was truly a jewel. We had such good times together when we were younger. We laughed til tears ran down our face. That laugh is stuck in my head and heart forever. She was blessed to have such a loving family. She is missed. Love you.

  7. Mr. Leonard and family,
I’m saddened to hear of the loss of Mrs. Leonard. Although I never had the privilege of meeting her, I feel as though I knew her through all of the stories told by Mr. Leonard. The love he has for her is a special kind of love not everyone finds or experiences in life. His care and concern for her was a testament of his dedication and loyalty to her and her wellbeing. I pray God’s strength as well as the priceless memories you shared will bring you peace and strength for you all in the days ahead.

  8. There isn’t enough room nor words to describe all our sweet memories. BJ; and I share everything for over 60 years. We have been there for each other through good times, bad times, our highs and lows in our life. My heart is broken 💔 and she took part of me with her. However; I know she can remember things now and she is with Ronnie, mama, and other loved ones that were there to greet her when she graced those pearly gates of heaven. I know in my heart she heard me Monday when I prayed with her and told her that I loved her and I would see her later. I look forward to our reunion when I get the chance to have some more of her fried chicken, chocolate cake, and banana pudding. BJ will always be in my heart and her secrets are safe with me; as she took mine with her. Now; rest peacefully my BESTEST FRIEND. You have served everyone you loved well and now, the Lord has given you rest. For ever and always ❤️❤️❤️. I love My Sis from another Mother 💔❤️🥰😘.

  9. Dear Macon, it was a great honor to know Miss Betty, we were happy to be your neighbors for the last 10 years. We used to love for Betty to come and sit by our fire pit. My youngest Tanner loved when she scratched his back. Hugs and prayers for you all now.

  10. Dear Macon, Lenny, and Joe, So sorry to hear this! You are all in my thoughts and prayers! May God comfort you during this sad time. Just treasure your precious memories you shared together and you will be together again one glorious day! Deepest sympathy and prayers.

  11. To say Mrs. Leonard was like family would be an understatement. I’ve known her for nearly as long as I can remember. I was introduced to her when Lenny and I became young classmates and friends in elementary school. As the saying goes, over the years, Lenny became my “brother from another mother”. Moreover, Mrs. Leonard became my dear second mother. There are very few people who are as warm and welcoming as Mrs. Leonard. Although she will be painfully missed, I know that she is now in a better place and is smiling at us all from above.

  12. Betty Jean was a very special lady. I got to visit with her a few times when she visited Hilton & Lisa in Florida. My condolences to the family.

  13. So sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. She was definitely a friend and one of my favorite people at Boice Willis Clinic. I will be praying for her family. 🙏🏻❤️
