Rocky Mount – David “Elton” Pridgen, Sr., age 91, passed away on Thursday, May 14, 2026.  Born in Edgecombe County, NC on October 19, 1934, he was the son of the late William Talmage Pridgen, Sr. and Mary “Ella” Brake Pridgen.  He was also preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Mae Perry Pridgen; his brothers, Jesse “Bennett” Pridgen, Jerry Bryant Pridgen, and William “Bill” Talmadge Pridgen, Jr.; and his sisters, Melba Pridgen Carlisle, Mary “Helen” Pridgen Weaver, and Thelma Ruth Pridgen Daniels.

A faithful and devoted believer in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Elton or “Big-E” as he was known by his church family, was a long-time member of Oakdale Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, a Sunday School Teacher, was a member of the choir, in addition to a variety of other roles.  Affectionately known by many as the “Bread Man”, he retired from Merita Bakery after 36 years of delivering bread and other pastries.  Throughout the years Elton had a love for sports, whether it was playing semi-professional baseball in his younger years, to church softball, or volunteering as a referee for Upwards Basketball.  Most of all, he especially loved spending time with family and friends and expressing positivity and encouragement to all those whom he encountered.  A devoted and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and good friend to many, Elton will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Elton is survived by his children, Vickie Pridgen Sledge (Matt), David Elton Pridgen, Jr. (Ann), and Janet Pridgen Smith (Jimmy); his grandchildren, Lauren Holloman (Jeremy), Ashley Pridgen (Judd), Michelle Alvers (Christopher), Jared Pridgen (Kimberly), Zachary Smith (Elizabeth) and Deanna Smith; his great-grandchildren, Audrey, Alora, Waverly, Evander, Abigail, Isabelle, Kaylee, John David, Jacob, Carson, and Cheyenne; his sister, Arlene Pridgen Fisher; his brothers-in-law, Rev. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Our hearts are broken for Big E’s family left behind, and the loss they feel without him to share in the days ahead. But we rejoice that Big E is reaping his reward for a faithful life lived for his God and Savior, and that he’s already heard “Well done, good and faithful servant”. We also rejoice that he’s now fully healed, walking eternally in Jesus’s presence, and reunited with his precious Bernice.

  2. Big E taught me alot in our friendship. Every night after choir practice, he had something to teach me. I thank God for Big E and will celebrate him home. I also look forward to seeing him again.

  3. Mr. Elton will truly be missed. He was such a loving man and he sure loved the Lord. Prayers for the family.

  4. Elton worked for my dad at Meadowbrook Dairy driving a milk truck for many years. I was in High School at West Edgecombe and played basketball. Elton would stop by almost every day to play a little basketball and give me some pointers. I always thought he was such a great person.

  5. No right words but heartfelt thanks to this man who touched so many lives. Surely he will be missed while comfort comes knowing he had faith and is welcomed into everlasting life.
    Thank you
    Thank you
    Thank you

  6. Big E reflected the love of the Lord in so many ways! We will miss you! Love you!

  7. My Grandaddy was the most honorable man I’ve known. I love and miss him terribly. And though it doesn’t ease our pain, the world is a better place because he was here.

  8. My sincere heart felt sympathies to all of you. Elton was my first cousin. His mother, Ella was my aunt, sister to my father, James. One of my fondest memories was of Elton at a family reunion that Ruth and Billy hosted. Elton sat on the front porch, the front porch where I grew up, singing gospel songs. It was amazing!! Their voices were beautiful!
Elton and Bernice were always so very kind to me, and each time that I was around them, I felt God’s presence.
May God grant you peace, and give you strength during this time.Keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers.
    Love,
    Brenda Laramore
