Charles Edward "Ed" Mills

Rocky Mount – Charles Edward “Ed” Mills, Sr., age 84, passed away on Monday, March 16, 2026.  Born in Pitt County, NC on July 21, 1941, he was the son of the late Charlie William Mills and Lillian Ruth Riggs Mills.  He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Katharine Davis Mills; his second wife, Lois Adkins Mills; his daughter, Susan Annette Sparks; and his two sisters, Norma Ruth Mills Lindsey and Jean Elizabeth Mills James.

A man of many talents, Ed owned and operated Kwik Kash Grocery for over 20 years before going to work as a postal carrier with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement after 12 years.  Following the passing of his wife Katharine in 1968, he was both dad and mom to his children for many years thereafter until he met his second wife, Lois.  A family man through and through, Ed especially cherished and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and his dogs.  Always active in his yard, he was known to be very particular in how his yard and garden looked and took great joy in critiquing the yards of his family and friends.  A devoted and loving father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, and good friend to many, Ed will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Ed is survived by his sons, Charles Edward “Chuck” Mills, Jr. (Teresa) and Randall Allen Mills, Sr. (Phoebe); his daughter, Kathy White (Kevin); his grandchildren, Rochelle Clayborne (J.C.), Jordy Bridgers (Gordon), Kayla Mills, Morgan Edwards (Andrew), Nelson Mills, Brandon Shannonhouse (Leah), Justin Shannonhouse (Cessily), Katie Harding (Brandon), Megan Cratt (Evan), and Allen Mills; his 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends.

A Graveside Service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 AM in the Rocky Mount Memorial Park, 4454 Dortches Blvd., Rocky Mount, NC 27804 with his son, Randall Allen Mills, Sr. officiating.  Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM prior to the service at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ed’s name to Kitty Askins Hospice Center, 2402 Wayne Memorial Drive, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
