Battleboro – Frances Elizabeth Baker Krohne, age 96, passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025. Born in Nash County, NC on July 5, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Cecil Exum Baker, Sr. and Evelyn V. Jackson Baker. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Anthony Shick Jr.; her second husband, Carl Krohne; her daughter, Kimberlee Carson Cianciola-Pickard; her sisters, Helen Joanne Baker and Nettie Marie Baker Plummer; and her brother, Cecil Exum Baker, Jr.
Fran attended school in Rocky Mount, Whitakers, and graduated from Wagram High School. Following, she attended Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte where she received her nursing degree and went to work in obstetrics for Parkview Hospital in Rocky Mount. After a few weeks, Fran relocated to Chicago where she attended Chicago-Lying and obtained her certificate in maternal and childcare. A veteran of the United States Navy, she entered the Navy Nurse Corps in 1954 until her honorable discharge in 1956. A loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many, Fran will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Fran is survived by her son, David Michael Shick, Sr. (Diane); her grandson, David Michael Shick, Jr.; her brother, John Daniel “Dan” Baker (Debbie); her niece, Alice S. Thomas; and many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dearest friends.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Fran’s life will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at 11:00 AM in the Battleboro United Methodist Church, 229 E Battleboro Ave, Battleboro, NC 27809 with Parker Phillips officiating. A Private Family Burial will be held at Battleboro Cemetery at a later time.

I remember Fran when she was a nurse at Abbott. She was always such a kind compassionate person, and I enjoyed talking with her. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
