In Loving Memory of Command Sergeant Major Otis L. Hinton Sr.

Command Sergeant Major Otis L. Hinton Sr., a proud and decorated United States Army combat veteran, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 81.

Command Sergeant Major Hinton served his nation with unwavering devotion, dedicating more than three decades to the United States Army.  Rising through the ranks to become a respected leader, he guided and inspired those around him through his strength, discipline, and quiet wisdom.  His time in uniform reflected his deep sense of duty and commitment to others, but it was his heart — not his rank — that defined him.  Whether leading soldiers, raising his children, or helping a neighbor, he lived by example, showing that true leadership is rooted in service, compassion, and humility.  Though his career was filled with achievements, his proudest legacy lives on in the lives he shaped — the soldiers he mentored, the family he cherished, and the community he uplifted long after he hung up his uniform.

Born on March 24, 1944, in Suffolk, Virginia, Otis L. Hinton Sr. was known not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his strength of character, deep compassion, and quiet generosity.  He was a devoted father to his two beloved children, Otis Jr. and Seantoya, and a cherished brother to his sisters, Lear, Lessie, and Stella, and brothers, David and James.

Otis had a deep love for his family, and nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his grandchildren — his grandson, Tye and twin granddaughters, Layla and Zoe.  He adored them fiercely, sharing stories, laughter, and lessons that will live on in their hearts forever.

Outside of uniform, Otis found fulfillment in raising German Rottweilers and ostriches, a unique and joyful pursuit that reflected his love of animals and his appreciation for life’s unexpected adventures.  He was also an avid reader, often found with a book in hand, exploring history, philosophy, and stories that deepened his understanding of the world.

Above all, Otis L. Hinton Sr. believed in the power of family.  He made it his mission to bring loved ones together and keep them close, serving as a steady anchor through life’s storms and celebrations.  His legacy of service, love, and integrity will continue to live on in the lives he touched — as a soldier, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.

A Funeral Service to celebrate Otis’ life will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Word Tabernacle Church, 821 Word Plaza, Rocky Mount, NC  27804, with full military honors.  A visitation with family will be from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM prior to the service.  There will be a repass immediately following the service.  Please RSVP at https://form.jotform.com/253096334840054
