Enfield – Harriet McFadden Bobbitt Moss, age 89, passed away on Monday, October 13, 2025. Born in Mecklenburg County, NC on April 21, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Retired North Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice William Haywood Bobbitt, Sr. and Sarah Buford Dunlap Bobbitt. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dan Schuyler “D.S.” Moss; her granddaughter, Miranda Gurkin; her sisters, Buford Bobbitt “Buff” Sachtler and Sarah Bobbitt Carter; and her brother, William Haywood Bobbitt, Jr.
The youngest of four children, Harriet attended Central High School, followed by attendance at Greensboro College and graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was active in student government and her sorority Pi Beta Phi. Harriet taught 4th grade in Raleigh for one year prior to her marriage to D.S. in June 1958, a marriage of 46 years until his death in September 2004.
Harriet grew up in the city of Charlotte and knew nothing of farm life prior to her marriage to D.S. She described her role as wife to a farmer and cattleman as a great adventure which she fully embraced. Harriet devoted many years to the Girls in Action ministry of Enfield Baptist Church. She enjoyed photography and documented farm life through many years and seasons. Full of life and always one to enjoy a great conversation, Harriet was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and a dear friend to many, she will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
Harriet is survived by her daughters, Dannie Moss, of Greenville and Eva Watkins, of Rocky Mount; her son, Tom Moss and wife, Ashley, of Enfield; her four grandchildren, Benton Moss and wife, Morgan, of Rocky Mount, Schuyler Moss of Waterloo, Canada, Katie Moss of Greenville, and Ben Watkins of Rocky Mount; her three great-granddaughters, Merin, Maura, and McCauley Moss; her nephews, Bill Carter, Will Bobbitt, Ed Bobbitt, J.D. Bobbitt, and Kirk Sachtler; her nieces, Kay Toke and Betsy Wheeden; her great nieces and nephews; and her special friends Jeff Frazier and wife, Sharon, Amanda Merritt, and Becky Hasty.
A Graveside Service to celebrate Harriet’s life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 2:00 PM at the D.S. Moss Family Cemetery, 23500 NC Hwy 48, Enfield, NC 27823, with Rev. Becky Zartman Carpenter officiating. A reception will follow the graveside service at the home of Tom and Ashley Moss. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Avenue, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Harriet’s name to either Enfield Baptist Church, 200 W. Burnette Avenue, Enfield, NC 27823 or to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 231 N Church St, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.

Harriet was a delightful lady. I would always enjoy our “talks” when she would come in the office at PHE.
In talking with her those times, I did learn that she enjoyed talking, chocolate and friendship. She always had good conversations when she saw you anywhere. I know she will be missed by many.
