ROCKY MOUNT – Mary Evelyn Stallings Baker, age 78, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025.  Born in Franklin County, NC on May 19, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Stallings and Julia Moore Stallings.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carter Baker; her daughter, Tracey Radford; and her faithful companion, Eddie Kennedy.

Mary was truly one of a kind—a firecracker whose presence could light up any room.  Known for her playful spirit and quick wit, she loved to “talk junk” and keep everyone around her laughing.  She was the life of the party, bringing joy and energy wherever she went.  Mary had a deep love for music, and nothing made her happier than riding around with her favorite songs playing.  From the smooth sounds of Kenny G to the classics of Elvis, Céline Dion, and the soulful guitar of Stevie Ray Vaughan, music was the soundtrack of her life.  She also found great joy in the beauty of creation.  Mary adored her flowers and tended to them with great care, right down to the exact time she watered them.  Hummingbirds were a special delight to her, often bringing her moments of peace and wonder.  Her constant companions were her beloved dogs, Haley and Penny.  Haley especially never left her side, faithfully following her wherever she went.  Together, they were an inseparable pair, a true testament to Mary’s loving and loyal nature.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Tonja Baker; her grandson, Robbie Jordan and his wife, Chelsea; her brother, Ralph Stallings and his wife, Phyllis; and Demetrius Wiggins, who lovingly knew her as “Mama.”

A celebration of Mary’s life is to be determined.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to assist with the care of her final wishes.
