Melvin Joseph "Mel" Cook

Rocky Mount – Melvin Joseph “Mel” Cook, age 85, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2025.  Born in Syracuse, NY on November 21, 1939, he was the son of the late Joseph Alexander Cook and Esther Susan Miller Cook.  He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Simone Rose Benoit Cook; his sister, Louise Cook Carver; and his brothers, Robert N. Cook, Bruce Floyd Cook, and Neal Milton Cook.

Following his service in the United States Army having served with the 7^th Special Forces Group, Mel began his career with Bristol Myers Pharmaceutical Company where he started in maintenance working his way up to manufacturing engineer. He worked for the company for 21 years before transitioning to American Pharmaceuticals in Buffalo, NY until his retirement after 18 years.

Mel was a devoted husband, dedicated father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. He enjoyed camping with his wife and family and meticulously maintaining his yard and gardens. Mel was truly a renaissance man forever working on home improvement projects and building his creations in the family garage.

While our hearts mourn the loss, we take comfort in knowing Mel is rejoining his beloved wife to continue their travels and laughter. Mel will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

Mel is survived by his sons, Dale Cook and Jeff Cook and wife, Terri; his grandchildren, Jackson Cook, Cole Cook, Abbygail Cook, Sean Cook, and Jarrett Moss; and many nieces and nephews.

A Special Gathering of Family and Friends to celebrate Mel’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N. Winstead Ave., Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
