Steven Francis Kufs

ROCKY MOUNT – Steven Francis Kufs, age 74, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Born in Long Island, NY on June 8, 1949, he was the son of Lillian Rudolph Kufs and the late Francis Richard Kufs. Steven worked in the New York Court system for many years. He began as a court officer and retired as a Deputy Chief Clerk. He moved to Rocky Mount in 2004 after he retired. Steven realized that total retirement wasn’t to his liking. He enjoyed swimming and joined the Harrison Family YMCA. Steven eventually worked at the YMCA as a lifeguard and adaptive swimming instructor until his cancer diagnosis in 2018. Steven is survived by his mother, Lillian Rudolph Kufs; his wife, Vanna Whitaker-Kufs; his children, Eric Kufs (Sydney), Meredith Newman (Jason); his stepchildren, Danielle Whitaker and Marquitta Cobb; his granddaughters, Abigail, Sally Jane and Jordin; his sisters, Mary Viccharelli (Stephen), Patricia Chirco (Joseph) and Kathleen Kufs; his brothers, Michael Kufs (Michele) and John Kufs (Alice); and many nieces and nephews. A Special Gathering of Family and Friends to celebrate Steven’s life will be held on Sunday, December 10, 2023, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 1130 N.   2. Mr. Steve will always be my “y” dad. So many people thought he was my dad! I remember happy years opening the pool with him and talking for hours. He always had such wisdom to share, plenty of jokes and wise cracks, and always gave such good hugs. He will forever remain in my memory. Sending hugs to heaven Mr. Steve! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
