Janet Abbott Poythress

ROCKY MOUNT - Janet Abbott Poythress, age 82, passed away on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. Born in Henderson, NC on June 24, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Wilton Hartwell Abbott and Hannah Harrell Abbott. She was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Edgar Dameron and Melvin Marks. Janet leaves behind to cherish her memory, husband of 64 years, Edwin Braxton Poythress; her children, Michael Poythress of Castalia, Diana Zwilling (Gregg) of Wake Forest, Patricia Shumack (Don) of Nashville. She is also survived by grandchildren, Kristen Robinson (Ryan), Elizabeth Shumack, Kelley Poythress; great-grandson, Joel Robinson; brother, Hartwell Abbott (Marybell) of Henderson; sisters, Elizabeth Marks of Henderson, Diana Ross (Travis) of Henderson, Margret Dameron of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. Her life was surrounded by many friends and caretakers who were more like family, Debra Moore, Leslie Logwood, Maxine Moore, Linda Nicholson, Wilhelmina Williams, Veronica Dancy, and Wilhemina Robinson. Janet had a deep love for her family and her faith in God. She also enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, reading, and needlepoint stitching. A Celebration of Janet's Life will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and Cremation Services. Visitation with the family will be from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. Donations may be made to Community Hospice in lieu of flowers.
