H. Everett Marion

ROCKY MOUNT - Rev. Hugh Everett Marion, 94, died Monday, August 14, 2017 at his home in Rocky Mount. He is proceeded in death by wife Jane Bridges Marion, daughter Nancy Marion Outlaw, parents Edward Elwell and Sarah Nancy Denny Marion, and six brothers. Born in Surry County, NC, on April 2, 1923, Rev. Marion profoundly touched many lives through his dedication to God and commitment to ministry. He was forever grateful for his journey, and he never ceased to wonder that saying "yes" to God could lead to such a rich and extraordinary life. He graduated from Shoals High School in Pinnacle, NC in 1939, and served in the Navy during World War II where he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and served as a Radioman 2nd Class from 1944-1946. He graduated from Campbell College in Buies Creek, NC in 1950; Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, TN in 1952; and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC in 1956. Rev. Marion married the love of his life, Jane Bridges, on June 1, 1951 and together they created a loving home grounded in faith and prayer. Their deep love for God and commitment to each other provided a solid foundation which undergirded a remarkable life of ministry. Rev. Marion served as Pastor of Del Rio Baptist Church in Del Rio, TN from 1951-1952; Pastor of Belhaven Baptist Church in Belhaven, NC from 1953-1956; Pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church in Mount Airy, NC from 1956-1960; Pastor of Chalybeate Springs Baptist Church in Fuquay-Varina, NC from 1960-1970; and Pastor of West Edgecombe Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC from 1970-1985 where he was honored to have the title of Pastor Emeritus. Following his retirement, Rev. Marion continued his passion for ministry by serving as an interim pastor for many other churches throughout North Carolina. Rev. Marion is survived by daughter Martha Marion Lancaster and her husband Watson of Rocky Mount; daughter Joy Marion Gambill and her husband Chris of Winston-Salem; son-in-law Gene Outlaw; grandchildren David Everett Leonard, Blake Leonard, Brooks Whitehurst, Brett Lancaster, Josh Outlaw, Anna Outlaw Jarrett, Macon Gambill, and Katie Gambill; and great grandchildren Cane Whitehurst, Maggie Whitehurst, Scarlett Lancaster, Olive Lancaster, Emma Kate Outlaw, and Charlotte Jean Outlaw. A Funeral Service will be held in the sanctuary of West Edgecombe Baptist Church on Sunday, August 20, 2017 at 3:00 PM, with burial to follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. The family will receive friends the evening before, on Saturday, August 19, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at West Edgecombe Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the West Edgecombe Baptist Church, 13821 NC-43, Rocky Mount, NC 27801.   3. Rev. Marion was a wonderful interim pastor at Oak Level Baptist. His energy and commitment was amazing. He was so very interested in the youth and attended many of their activities. I loved the stories he shared with each sermon. He truly was a Man of God with a Servant’s Heart and was called to do his work. I know he will be missed by many.

  7. I remember well, the day Rev. Marion led me to the Lord. He taught his flock well, and I thank God for that. For now, we peer through a glass, darkly, not understanding it all. But now, his tears are washed away, no more pain, no anguish, only the beloved face and warm embrace of his Savior–Jesus the Christ. God bless him and his family. We love you all. The Beddingfields
