ROCKY MOUNT - Maurice Bennett Tolston, age 91, passed away on Thursday, April 5, 2018. Born in Edgecombe County, NC on November 12, 1926, he was the son of the late Richard Thomas Tolston and Claudia Dorinda Powell Tolston. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Phoebe Lloyd Harris Tolston; and nine brothers and sisters.
Maurice graduated from West Edgecombe School. He attended West Edgecombe Baptist Church. Maurice was also a volunteer firefighter with the West Edgecombe Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He was a charter member of the fire department and the last living charter member as well. Maurice was a farmer first and foremost. He was also a master craftsman, wood working, sign painter, artist, including oils, watercolors, wood, and iron. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him.
Maurice leaves behind to cherish his memory, sons, Richard Thomas Tolston and wife, Pat, of Rocky Mount, James Bennett Tolston and wife Joan, of Rocky Mount; and daughter, Helen T. Lassiter and husband, Andy, of Rocky Mount. He is also survived by grandchildren, Adam Tolston, Bennett Tolston, Eric Tolston, Chadwick Tolston, Reece Lassiter, Dillon Lassiter; great-grandchildren, Mason Tolston, Chase Tolston, Julianne Tolston; sister, Joyce Tolston Kfoury; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
A Visitation will be held on Monday, April 9, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home. A Graveside Service will follow at 12:00 Noon at Pineview Cemetery with Rev. Parker Phillips officiating. The Family will receive friends and relatives at other times at the home of Andy and Helen Lassiter.

Dear Tolston family, I hope you’ll accept my condolence at this difficult and painful time for I went through such a time when this enemy death took my entire family and I’d like to share where I found help. I found comfort and hope in what I read in Jehovah Gods word the Bible at John528,29 for there it tells us we’ll see our love ones again in the resurrection when Jesus brings them back here on earth and at Isaiah258 we’re told that this enemy death will be swallowed up forever. With these scriptures and others I’m able to cope with my loss and get through each day because now I know I’ll see my love ones again and sop can you. I wanted to share this with you now when hope and comfort is needed hoping this will help you also in some way for this is my purpose in sharing this with you at this time and please know that I do share your grief and hope you’ll feel free to let me know if I accomplished my purpose. I am so sorry for your loss. Eric and I considered Maurice and the rest of you to be good lake neighbors and friends. His passing leaves a space that cannot be filled. I will always have fond memories of time spent on lazy summer afternoons solving all the problems of the world while enjoying the peace of the lake. I will miss him.

Chadwick, so sorry to hear about your grandfather. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
I did not know Mr. Maurice very well but I wish I had. The times that I saw him, his presence was so powerful and great. The first time I met him was in 2015, at his house, on Christmas Day. He looked up at me and smiled. I gave him a hug and I’m that moment I felt like I had known him for years. I remember that he gave me an envelope with the words Eric’s Girlfriend on the front and I just thought that was the sweetest thing, for him to even think of me. I went to him when we were leaving and told him thank you and he smiled again. That memory was and still is so meaningful to me. I will miss you, Mr Maurice. Your grandson admired you so much and I thank you for everything you taught him. We both love you!! Love, Allison Willcox
