Holly Caroline Fryar

December 23, 1993 ~ July 21, 2015

Rocky Mount - Holly Caroline Fryar, 21, passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2015. Born December 23, 1993, she was the daughter of Dr. Mel Webster Fryar and Deborah Anne Dericke Fryar both of Rocky Mount. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Roger Dericke; her paternal grandmother, Nell Marie Webster Fryar; and paternal grandfather, James Henry Fryar, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory, her parents; sister, Heather Marie Fryar of Rocky Mount; her brother, Ian Webster Fryar of Rocky Mount; and her maternal grandmother, Suzanne Bedard Dericke of North Myrtle Beach, SC. Holly was a 2012 Graduate of Rocky Mount Senior High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While in school, she gathered a long list of accolades and accomplishments. From National Honor Society while in high school to volunteering with Dance Marathon at UNC, Holly was always focused on bettering herself and others. She recently received an award from the UNC Chancellors Office for Courageous Achievement to recognize her dedication to perseverance and service. Even during her battle with cancer, her spirit was unwaveringespecially while playing soccer, the sport she was most passionate about. That spirit continued into college where she sported Carolina blue every chance she could. Holly loved attending football games and hardly ever missed a chance to see the Tar Heels in the Dean Dome. Nonetheless, her passion was even greater for raising money for the Lineberger Cancer Center at UNC; this became the basis of ”The Holly Project.” The brainchild of her brother, “The Holly Project” was started to raise money for pediatric cancer patients and their families at the Lineberger Cancer Center. While the initial goal was to raise $10,000, the project far surpassed this goal and raised $25,000. The love, support, and success of this initiative truly exemplified Hollys passion for helping patients and their families. Even in her final days, continuing “The Holly Project” was something that Holly felt very strongly about. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and “The Holly Project” became something that brought all of these people together. It was Hollys hope that “The Holly Project” would remain to “Fight Holly Strong” and continue to support families affected by pediatric cancer.
