Janice Eleanor Beavon Gravely

May 9, 1921 ~ December 15, 2020

ROCKY MOUNT - Born nearly 100 years ago, Janice Eleanor Beavon Gravely died Tuesday, December 15, 2020. She was born May 9, 1921 in Spokane, WA, the daughter of Lottie Jane Bowns and David Edwin Beavon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund Keen Gravely, her brother, David Kent Beavon and her sister, Jeanne Beavon Clary; her son Peyton Kent Gravely, and infant daughter, Meredith Elaine Gravely. She is survived by her son Edmund Keen Gravely, Jr. (Ashlin) of Rocky Mount, daughters Jane Candace Gravely and Louise Gravely Hughes (John) both of Rocky Mount, her daughter-in-law, Kim Hill Gravely of Westfield, NC; grandchildren Peyton Kent Gravely, Jr. (Bonnie) of Westfield, NC, Sharon Gravely Hamilton (Benjamin) of Mobile, AL, Angelyn Frances Gravely of Durham, NC, and David Winston Gravely of Portland, OR, Edmund Keen Gravely III of Raleigh, NC, Anna Beavon Gravely of Raleigh, NC, John Edward Hughes III (Devon) of Tokyo, Japan, Rebecca Eleanor Hughes of Birmingham, UK, Jeremiah Elisha David Hughes and Joshua Edmund Hughes, both of Rocky Mount, NC, along with two foster daughters, Tim Sirimonkol of Bangkok, Thailand, and Tam Sirimonkol Siddhichai (Tum) of Raleigh, NC. Raised in Los Angeles, CA, Janice grew up during the Great Depression, her family at times sharing their home with other families in distress. She graduated from the University of California - Los Angeles (UCLA); she was valedictorian and president of her graduating class, and she graduated with honors. She was also president of her sorority, Tri Delta, and a member of Mortar Board, a national honor society. During her junior year at UCLA, after Pearl Harbor, she determined to serve after graduation, when she was commissioned into the Navy WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She asked for duty station on either coast and was assigned to the Naval Station in Olathe, Kansas, where she met Lieutenant Junior Grade Ed Gravely, who was a naval aviator instructor. They married at Love Field, TX on May 7, 1944. After the war, Janice and Edmund moved to Rocky Mount, NC, where he joined the family business, China American Tobacco Company, which had been founded by his grandfather. Through his business dealings in Thailand, he met Lert Sirimonkol, who asked Janice and Edmund to host his four daughters. After Tim and Tam's parents and two younger sisters died in an automobile accident, they remained part of the Gravely family. Transitioning from California to North Carolina, Janice knit her life into the extended Gravely family in Rocky Mount and into Southern life. She was a member of the Junior Guild of Rocky Mount, served on the Rocky Mount public school board of education, taught for a time at RM Wilson Junior High School, and was a Girl Scout troop leader. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Colonial Dames. In her thirties, she became an avid painter, using all media - watercolors, pastels, charcoal, and oils; she continued until earlier this year. The walls of her and others' homes have become galleries of paintings in oils and watercolors, capturing years of her own and her children's lives, trips to Europe, Israel, and Russia, as well as summers in Roaring Gap, NC. Her work was featured at the Dunn Center Mims Gallery at NC Wesleyan College. In 2011, her "Flags on Falls Road from the Memorial to the Mill: One Nation - Under God" was on exhibit at the Imperial Art Center, Rocky Mount, NC, and her self-portrait was hung at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC. Later she was chosen as Wilson, NC's Artist of the Month. On a bitterly cold Sunday morning, January 10, 1982, Janice and Edmund flew to Statesville, GA in his single-engine Mooney 20 to accept his custom-made, newly purchased sailplane. Shortly into the flight, at 6000 feet, Edmund suffered a massive heart attack, leaving Janice to fly and land the plane by herself. The first of her two books, Won't Somebody Help Me!, tells how she wrestled the plane down, without help or training, only to crash short of a frozen field because she ran out of fuel. From the clear-cut forest crash site, she crawled several hundred yards to a house, where a nurse lived and saved her from freezing in the 8-degree winter weather. Surviving that miraculous crash with a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, a collapsed lung and internal injuries, she recovered and embarked on a new career - inspirational speaker and author. The story of escaping sure death became national news and was featured in the November 1982's Readers Digest, propelling her to an international platform, including Russia, China, Israel and Europe, as well as all over the United States. Janice was an active member of a number of churches in Rocky Mount - First United Methodist, West Mount Emanuel Holiness, Grace Covenant, Ridgecrest Worship Center, First Baptist and Christ Covenant. In the late 1960s, when charismatic renewal stirred many people across the country, she was among them. Her second book, Ground Level Christianity, detailed her walk of faith in Jesus. She was a frequent contributor to the Rocky Mount Evening Telegram, known for her strong advocacy of faith, individual responsibility, and hope for the United States. Janice worked with area ministers to hold noon prayer at City Hall on the National Day of Prayer, and conceived a way for churches and individuals to read aloud the entire Bible in a single day, to declare the importance of the Bible in our nation's life. In 2018, she was inducted into the Twin Counties Hall of Fame and recently received Rocky Mount's Distinguished Citizen Award from Mayor Sandy Roberson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her memory to Peacemakers, Your Choice Pregnancy Center, or other charitable organization. Memories Timeline

  1. Janice was such a special person and elegant lady. She has made her mark on this world that few of us can do. To her family deepest sympathies. May we all live as gracious and caring life as Janice.

  2. Our hearts are hurting with the loss of Janice, such a beautiful and special lady. We will always treasure the times spent with her and our memories of her. It is indeed comforting to know she is now with her Savior whom she loved so. May God give all peace and comfort in these difficult days.

  3. Janice has been sluch a inspiration to me. I first met her at the Christian Womens club.. It was such a blessing to serve on this committe with her. She always had a possive point to share. I know when she got to Heaven that God said well done faithful servant.

  4. Mrs. Gravely was a very spiritual and beautiful woman. I learned so much from her spiritually. She will be missed. She’s a gifted Angel in Heaven.

  5. I have never known life without Janice. In my mother’s absence, she always made me feel she had all the time in the world for me and my siblings, even while caring for her own family Most importantly, Janice was an open conduit to me for the presence of Jesus, through prayer and scriptural encouragement, but most of all through her unconditional LOVE! Robby and I both remember with fondness the powerful times of prayer and praise we shared with her at Roaring Gap. She was always up for something fun too! May we all be inspired to move forward into that place of knowing God’s presence in our lives the way Janice so vividly lived. It’s hard to be sad when I know how much she looked forward to seeing the Lover of Her Soul, face to face. Now she is cheering us on from that place of complete knowing and being completely known. I can just hear her infectious laugh of utter joy as she no longer has to see through a glass dimly. Love to all the family, Marlowe Watson Carruth & Robby Carruth

  6. Jane and family, When I first met Janice in the mountains I knew we would be lifelong friends and we were. I am so glad to have spent time with her. My thoughts are prayers are with you as you face these difficult days ahead. The memories may bring tears in the short term, and that is okay. Her victory in Jesus is our temporary loss on earth, but those memories will bring smiles one day, and you will hold those memories dear to your heart. My God hold you and your family in the palm of His hand.

  10. Your mother was one of the greatest Women of God and touched every generation that encountered her. Her hospitality was the platform God used in our lives to invite us into the greatest relationship we would ever know. To know Him and be known by Him. Lord Jesus! Through her trials, she showed us the way to triumph and victory through faith, prayer and Word of God! My first memories of prayer were in her art studio.. She modeled a walk with God for us all. It truly was an impartation that changed us all forever. Love , Paul and Carol Kacmarcik

  14. What a life and testimony of a faithful woman. She was more than a conqueror through Jesus who loves us and now she is with Him and her other loved ones. Romans 837-39. May her memory be a blessing to her family and all those who knew and loved her.

  15. condolences and prayers….I loved hearing Mrs Gravely speak, her voice was soothing to one’s ears and her writings were always truth from God’s Word….We will miss her Rocky Mt Telegram editorial contributions. Her Godly influence, legacy has been evidenced through her children and grandchildren, that we’ve had the privilege of knowing Mike and Gatsy Eason

  16. Janice, what a very special lady who was always so gracious, kind and took the time to speak with you and part some of her wisdom as well. Our prayers and thanks for such a wonderful and spiritual lady.

  17. I am so sadden by the loss of this remarkable woman. She lived an incredible life, inspiring so many, yet, she was always welcoming to the least of us. I remember when she was inducted into the Twin Counties Hall of Fame and how we didn’t think the very large venue would hold all of those who wanted to celebrate her (and there were 10 other inductees that year). I remember the look of pride on her daughter, Jane’s, face as she introduced her mom. Jane — I know you will feel this loss throughout your soul, but please remember how much your mom meant to so many and how she literally changed the world. She has left such a beautiful legacy in you! Now she goes on to Heaven to rest; however, knowing Mrs. Janice, she’ll probably form some committee to bring more people to Christ. I truly feel blessed to have known such a Godly woman and will always think about her when the azaleas are blooming. Love you, My Dear Friend Jane!

  18. Mrs. Gravely was especially loving. May her family know fully the heritage that is theirs from her through Christ. I am very sorry you have lost her.

  19. Janice was great! She was strong in the Lord and tender at the same time. What a combination.I admire all the gravelys-apples dont fall far from the tree.Your mother was a great witness for Jesus.Heaven is rejoicing today!

  20. I too was privileged to stay in the home of Janice. Actually she was the first person that I stayed with while speaking out of town. The person that described her to me simply stated, ‘You will feel like you are sitting at the feet of Jesus’. She was absolutely correct. Such a beautiful display of kindness. And so encouraging. She will be greatly missed by many folks, but I know Heaven is having a celebration.

  21. What a life she lived! This is a photo I took of her when I stayed with her and Jane while speaking in the area. It is one of the greatest honors of my life to have known her and to have called her friend. She ran her race well and is now in Heaven’s stands cheering us on.

  22. Heartfelt prayers for family and close friends of true, compassionate ,Christian woman. So glad I had opportunity to pray with you at City Hall and walk in prayer walk with you. You have walked by faith and now reap the joys of heaven with Jesus. In Christian sympathy, Tom and Martha Lancaster Barnes

  23. A true loss for this world. A saint has joined the Heavens and is now thriving in His presence. I am sure she is now an angel. Truly a child of our Almighty Creator, she represented Him well while doing her mission on earth. I feel cheated that I only had the joy of meeting and seeing her for brief enjoyable moments few years ago, while visiting Wilmington or Rocky Mount; oh! how I could sense her bright light! Remarkable and admirable person who gave much fruit in His name. Well-rounded lady of truly avid and sharp intellect; in my conversations with her she displayed such sense of interest in diverse topics; ranging from international literature to international foods; from sports to computer engineering and electronics! She did not impose her views, but verified her own understanding, always open and ready to enrich younger minds! Proud to have met such a towering example of a human being! I pray that her wonderful family may continue to feel our Almighty’s comfort and His Omnipotent presence in all small and large details…. For now…..until we see her again… Sylvia Carolina Rivera

  24. What a wonderful woman who made a difference in so many lives. My parents knew them well through the tobacco business. She helped my mother leave her cancer body to go to heaven. I would take my kids by to visit her when seeing my dad. She inspired many to live a better life. She will always be remembered as a wonderful inspirational woman. Thank you Gravely family for sharing her with us.

  25. She was such a wonderful woman. I have many fond memories of walking over to your house and visiting, sitting on the porch, and playing cards. She led such an inspirational life. My condolences on your loss and blessings to your family. I’m generally up the mountain on weekends if you’re over this way.

  26. I met the Gravely family when I was 18 years old and a member of Grace Covenant Church. Mrs. Gravely lit up the room with her infectious smile, twinkle in her eye and indefatigable Faith and commitment to share Jesus Christ and the love of God. You have my sincere condolences in the loss of your beloved mother. Shermonica Scott and Family

  27. Ms Gravely was such an inspiration spiritually and so many other ways. I am privileged to have known for so many years. She will be missed.

  28. Dearest Gravely family, My heart was broken when I learned of Janice’s passing, yet knowing that she is sitting at the feet of Jesus gives me comfort. I know you will all miss this precious woman, but the legacy she has left behind is a strong and powerful testimony of the life she led. I credit Janice for my own spiritual journey. She introduced me to the power of the Holy Spirit and my life has never been the same. I have turned to Janice for guidance for many years now and I will miss her along with all of you. Allan and my family joins me in sending our love and heartfelt sympathies.

  29. What a life she lived! I have so many memories of life growing up next door on Falls Road… memories that will stay with me always. I am thankful to God for those memories and will treasure them. May God’s presence and comfort surround you, keep you, and carry you. Love, Harriet
