Dorothy Hardy Lucas

Dorothy Hazel Hardy Lucas, age 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 5, 2014. Born in Nash County on June 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Earl Dewey Hardy and Agnes Clay Hardy. She is also preceded in death by sisters, Frances Moss and Margaret Lynch; and brother, J. E. Hardy. After a formal retirement with 35 years of service at Montgomery Ward, Dorothy went on to work as a School Crossing Guard, to manage a Senior Citizen Nutrition site at Covenant Homes and as the office manager of Fox Ridge Apartments in Sharpsburg and Walnut Cove Apartments in Enfield; then finally retiring at the age of 79. She served on the Sharpsburg Board of Commissioners, was active with the Rocky Mount Women of the Moose, and loved the time she spent on Saturday nights dancing with the 39ers Club. She was a longtime member of Sharpsburg Baptist Church and later, a member of Cornerstone Vineyard Church. She was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She leaves behind her daughter, Vikki Reynolds and husband Dennis of Burlington NC; sons, Elton Gardner and wife Kathy of Chesterfield VA and Randy Gardner and wife Bobbie of Lynchburg VA; grandchildren, Teresa Bouthillier (Bryan), Brad Gardner (Kelly), Ginger Light (Jason), Tracie Moore, Amber Kiser (Marshall) and Talmadge Gardner (Joni); and great grandchildren, Haley Gardner, Jarred Light, Katleen Moore, Jayden Light, Noah Gardner and Gavin Moore. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00pm, Friday, April 11, 2014 at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Webb officiating. Visitation with the family will start at 1:30pm prior to the service. Burial will be at Red Oak Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington NC 27215 or Alzheimers North Carolina, 1305 Navaho Drive, Suite 101, Raleigh NC 27609.
