ROCKY MOUNT - Julia Cooke Pullen, 87, died on February 27, 2017. She was born in Littleton, North Carolina and later moved to Louisburg, North Carolina. Julia graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School where she was an honor student, a member of several clubs, and was a majorette.
During her life, she was a secretary at China American Tobacco Co., a bookkeeper for the City of Roanoke Rapids, and worked in the family businesses of Peacock Meat Co. and Edgemont Meats. Her professional pride and joy was owning Fairview Fabrics. She was a skilled seamstress and an astute business woman.
Julia was a member of First Baptist Church for 66 years. She served in several positions in Sunday School, but her great love was the music program. She was a member of the Inspiration Singers. Also, she played piano all her life.
Julia was the daughter of Katie Cooke and Thomas Ballard Cook, both deceased. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Phillip Pullen, daughter Sandra Otwell and her husband Ronnie of Greensboro, and daughter Judy Hughes and her husband George of Shallotte. She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer Malick (Brian King) and John Henriksen (Kristin); great-grandchildren Sophie Motes, Cherokee Motes (Brianna), and Smith Henriksen. A great great-grandchild is expected in August. Julia was predeceased by a grandson James Christopher Henriksen. She is also survived by a sister, Louise Gorham Jones of Roanoke Rapids, and brother Dave “Thomas” Cooke of Raleigh.
A Celebration of Julias Life will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 200 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount with the Rev. Bill Grisham officiating. Burial will follow at Rocky Mount Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 PM prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 200 S. Church Street, Rocky Mount, NC 27804.
