Mary D. B. Tanner was born on April 11, 1940. The Lord came down, took her by the hand and brought her up to heaven on November 18, 2016. Mary was preceded in death by her infant daughter Jennifer Ann Brumble, her parents John M. and Mary N. Dias and her late husband Thomas Truett Tanner.
Mary moved to Rocky Mount, NC in 1974. She and her husband built a successful business with Allstate Insurance Company for over 40 years. She was still actively working at the time of her demise. She was very fond of all her clients and treated them as though they were family.
Mary was very active in local organizations, assuming leadership roles in several groups. She was a dedicated member of the Business and Professional Womens Group and had been a member for 38 years. She was also very active with the Tar River Orchestra and was the Ad Chairman for them as well. She gave her time to volunteer with TROC for 15 years.
Mary knew no stranger and was the most giving and generous woman one could possibly meet. Her mantra was to always have “Peace on Earth”. She enjoyed countless hours of socializing while playing bridge with her friends. Everyone who knew her knew she was an avid fan of Wake Forest University football and basketball. Her grandchildren referred to her as Nanny or Nana. Her grandchildrens friends would also call her Nana as well.
Mary leaves to cherish her precious memories her daughters: Maria B. Newcomb (Ashley), Lisa M. Brumble (Robert), Mary Foyd Tanner, Patricia (Pat) Tanner Dent (Dan), Candice Tanner Talbert (Van), Teresa (Trudy) T. Tanner, and Graylyn Tanner-Rice (Arthur). She also leaves her memories to her sister, Marjorie (Marge) Yunger (Austin), to her grandchildren Mary Haven Weston, Abigail Newcomb, and Landon Newcomb, to her nephews Ed McCauley (Teresa), Tyler, and Blake McCauley, to her dear best friend Betty Bracy, and finally to a host of bridge and TROC friends.
We thank the ICU team at Nash General Hospital and the MICU team at UNC Memorial Hospital for giving our family two extra weeks to spend time with her and being so respectful to us at the hour of her death. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity that is close to your heart.

Dear Family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have know Mary for quite a few years. She was always sweet and helpful to everyone. I never knew Mary to say an unkind word or do an unkind thing to anyone. Mary was much loved by all her friends. Please know that we share your loss. Fondly, Liz and Gene Smallwood
This is truly a sad day. My wife and I have been doing business with Truett and Mary for 40 years. My father-in-law had been with them since Truett started with Allstate. These people will be truly missed by so many people. God bless the family.

I am heartbroken to be writing this at the death of my dear friend Mary Tanner. To her children and grandchildren I share in your grief. What a great loss to face. Many thoughts and memories come to my mind of Mary and Truett. Their love and devotion to each other and their family and friends and to their Churches and Friends made through their business over many years. So many people touched and saddened by her death. Now I say to the family, know you are loved and are in the prayers of many. Continue on in the courage and memory of Mary. God bless.

Mourning the loss of a very sweet & funny lady. She certainly did treat everyone as family. Was blessed to be a part of her family for many years. I’m heartbroken that I cannot attend her services and honor her that way. Love to all the NC family in our time of sorrow. But celebrating her life & memory always.
I want to send my deepest sympathy to the family of Mary D. B. Tanner. Gods word the bible tells us we can gain comfort from our heavenly father, even during times of sorrow. We pray to our heavenly father for help to cope with the sorrow felt from the death of a loved one. By prayer and supplication along with thanksgiving, let your petitions be made known to God; and the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your mental powers by means of Christ Jesus. Philippians 46 May you find comfort by relying on our heavenly father and learning more about the blessings of God’s kingdom. Local ministry volunteer
What a wonderful stepmother Mary was to we Tanner girls. Always loving and concerned and generous with all she had to share. Never invasive. Mary was always so welcoming when we wanted come visit. We adored going shopping with her because she had great taste and was a savvy shopper. I personally loved her fashion magazines that she always kept at the house. I will really miss is her Hon greeting…Hi, hon or Bye, hon or Thanks, hon. My life is richer because Mary Tanner was an integral part of it for nearly 40 years. Love and praying for all the family in our time of loss. Patsy Tanner Dent
Mary will be sorely missed by all who knew her. I appreciated her love, acceptance, and generous spirit. Although I grieve her passing, I’m happy to know she’s in Heaven, cheering on Wake Forest with my Pops. Sleep in heavenly peace, dear Mary. Trudy
