Elizabeth Flowers Phillips, 93, a longtime resident of Pinetops, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at The Fountains at The Albemarle in Tarboro.
Born on January 27, 1926 in Petersburg, Virginia, Elizabeth was the daughter of Otelia Wachsmann Flowers and William Oscar Flowers. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard Lee Phillips; and sister Sarah Flowers Pennington.
Mrs. Phillips is survived by her sisters Dorothy Flowers Wornom and Jean Flowers Grubbs and husband John Grubbs, all of Richmond, VA; and many nieces and nephews.
Known affectionately as "Tillie,” Mrs. Phillips graduated from Smithfield Massey Business School in Richmond and worked as an executive assistant in Richmond until her marriage in 1949 to Richard Lee Phillips of Pinetops. Upon moving to Pinetops, Mrs. Phillips immediately became involved the community, especially in the life of the Pinetops Presbyterian Church. During almost 70 years as an active member, Mrs. Phillips served as a Sunday School teacher, leader of Vacation Bible School. She held various offices in the local Presbyterian Women, as well as at the New Hope Presbytery district level, receiving the Honorary Life Membership Award from the Presbyterian Women of the Albemarle Presbytery.
While Mrs. Phillips was a longtime employee of the United States Postal Service, working in the local post office, her passion was volunteerism that benefited the community. Mrs. Phillips was a founder of the Pinetops Girl Scout Troop 692; a charter member of the Pinetops Junior Book Club; an active member of the Lioness Association of the Pinetops Lions Club and of the Royal Red Hatters of the Pines. Mrs. Phillips' compassion for others led her to serve as a volunteer at Heritage Hospital (Vidant Edgecombe) in Tarboro for many years.
Mrs. Phillips' family would like to thank the many friends from her church and in the community, who helped her over the years, especially Page Driver during recent years. Special recognition is merited by her caregiver, Robin Marie Jones, for her loving care and patient companionship during Mrs. Phillips' later years.
