ROCKY MOUNT - Matt Dawson Edwards, age 52, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, November 12, 2018. Born on July 18, 1966, he was the son of the late William Henry Edwards and Julia Presson Edwards of Goldsboro.
Matt retired with the rank of Corporal CSI from the Rocky Mount Police Department in 2015 after 27 years of dedicated service with the RMPD and the Wilson County Sheriff's Department. He studied Criminal Justice at Wilson Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Matt leaves behind four children to cherish his memory: Jordan Edwards Thomas and her husband, Caleb, Chase Edwards and his fianc, Pamela Mildon, Lauren Edwards, and Ethan Edwards, all of Rocky Mount. He is also survived by a brother, Reid Edwards and his wife, Teresa, of Pawley's Island, SC; a sister, Killian Edwards and her husband, Tim Evans, of Gainesville, GA; and nephews, Neil Edwards of Charlotte, Jonathan Edwards of Raleigh, and Banks Evans of Gainesville, GA.
A Celebration of Matt's Life will be held on Monday, November 19, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM prior to the service in the Atrium of Wheeler & Woodlief Funeral Home and also following the service.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to Honor Matt's memory with memorial contributions are asked to consider donations to Jordan Thomas, PO Box 1226, Rocky Mount, NC 27802.

Matt and I were great friends for many years and sadly we drifted apart through the years. My heart is broken to learn of his passing. I will forever cherish every moment I ever spent with such a kind and gentle soul. To the kids – know that your father loved you very much there was not one conversation or moment that he and I spent together that he didn’t ever mention you and talk about how special you were to him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. You will forever have a piece of my heart Matt!!

We are so sorry for your loss Matt was our neighbor. Just last year he was a guest in our home for Thanksgiving dinner. He was kind to us and my family enjoyed his company. Matt Edwards Family, from Howard Kendrick, Chaplain, Friend I was sorry i had to miss the service for Matt and say a few words. I had the pleasure of knowing Matt from the department and personally. We talked very deeply on several occasions and I, without hesitation and with no doubt wish to tell you the best news of all with Matt. He was a born again Christian with Jesus Christs Holy Spirit–the very Spirit of GOD, truly living in his heart. We prayed together a number of times about his getting free from the bondage that had so enveloped him. He was free in spirit… The things that grasped him were mental, not Spiritiual and he passed from this life to the greater life with GOD in heaven. If you are born again, as he was, you will see him again in the unending and unexplicable LOVE OF GOD… I am here for you family…just call me at 252 2661858… and i apologize for any discomfort which was possibly passed on to you by situations at the service.
